4th of July.
Great. I've always wanted to see one of those huge US fireworks displays.

Is there a big drive to curb fireworks because of pets (dogs in particular)?

In SA there is always a lot of resistance to fireworks from animal rights movements.

Tonight we went to one of our neighboring towns and spent the evening at the park there to enjoy one of the best fireworks shows that I have seen. It was a really impressive display.

Their are restrictions in most cities here against personal use of fireworks... with hefty fines given to folks who get caught shooting them. We have had a really dry month here in Texas, so those restrictions were extended to include the rural areas also... because of the fire risk.

I watched a segment on the news tonight about the increased number of stray dogs after the 4th because the dogs get frightened and run off... they don't let pets come to the big shows, i assume because it scares them. I really hadn't ever thought about it before though... I guess it is a fairly serious problem.

They do still sell them to individuals... here in Texas they are only available twice a year... 4th of July and New Years. They sell them for about 10 days before each holiday in little roadside stands. Apparently it is pretty good business, since there seem to be more and more of them each year. :)

If the weather is not dry, they will let individuals shoot them in the rural areas... Most cities have laws against shooting fireworks, since we have had so many houses lost to fire because of wreckless behavior... and the burns and other injuries that happen as well.

This year, they sold them everywhere... but it was illegal to shoot them anywhere nearby. Of course that didn't stop anyone. :)
