Any idea about - Linux - I'm setting up a new home PC.

Does Linux allow one to run games etc. that normally run on Windows?

we have our own net work. our main is windows XP. then we have linux/red hat.
the system is great for graphics and web design, but as a family online alot; it isn't so great. (we trade cases. they aren't all in at the same time :D ) oh your answer is no. we have regular windows 98 and whatever else :D

I've played around with Mandrake before - however it was a "take with you" version of Linux where your settings were stored on a USB drive and the OS booted from a CD. I think that would be a question to definitely take over to the Computers forum...I have doubts as to whether Win games would be compatible...the game designers' site could tell you depending on the game's age, but I would probably say that they're on the whole incompatible. As for other applications, there's plenty of open source stuff - OpenOffice and Firefox are compatible with Linux from what I know.

Hello Peeps

Tini .. Linux have a prog called wine :D that emulates windows in a shell, but most games new use directx 6, 7,8 or 9 it will be hard.
I have Fedora on one of my PC and it comes with some cool simple games, think Mandrake is the same.
but my main PC is XP I play some games like flight Simulator and Age of Empires :) which I am not sure will run on Linux.

I was forced to use one for a basic IT subject I had to do as part of the requirements of my degree... I hated it at first.. but then i realised the mac's are always more likely to be free in the computer lab... and my friend i do alot of assignments with has a mac... being surrounded by them has taught me how to use them :)i will use a mac over a pc at uni (simply because they are faster machines than the ibms at uni, and less people use them)

This has become VERY VERY techie for Emma's - I think we should chat about cats or something now;)

Thanks for all your input.

I see that the gap between Tini's post and mine suggests that tech talk was the issue that people wanted to discuss! ^_^
