What's a groupie?
There are stage performers there during the actual festival, but a great majority play one instrument or another. There's 'parking lot jams' going on all the time during the festival, except during the festival there are organized activities, stage performances or workshops.
Before the festival, it's basically just like the festival, except no stage performances... jams go on at all hours.
For some it's like a retreat... it's a great community, mostly away from electricity. It's camping out, but so much more.
The idea is to get there earlier than the festival so you can get a good spot camping for During the festival. As time has gone, people have gotten there earlier and earlier so they can get up top sooner. Each year more and more have decided to get there earlier, found out it's almost as much fun as the actual festival, and more and more come each year, earlier and earlier.
People go up to 3 weeks in advance. I don't know of other festivals that have this kind of line experience. To some of the other festivals we go, getting there a day or two early is good enough. I never used to go early, my friends did. In 2002 I went for 5 days, 2003 I went for more, and last year, the most.
It's the driving home for a good shower and night sleep in a bed that is the issue, otherwise I'd go for the full 3 weeks. I can't stay more than 4 or 5 days without coming home and it's a 4-5 hour drive each way.
I don't know how much longer I can keep doing this, so each year is a bonus.
