  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was watching a show on tv last night. I think it was called "They Sold Their Souls For Rock and Roll". Anyways, they were talking about the violence and Satanism in music and how music influences. One of the artists they talked about was Eminem. They quoted some of his lyrics. I looked up some more of them today on the internet. The words are awful! The violence and sex is bad enough, but he cusses all the time! How can people listen to that?

Edited to add: I'm not saying Eminem is a Satanist. I am talking about the part of the show that was talking about violence.

Oh man....another anti-rap/anti-Eminem topic. How long will this go on?

I have so many things I want to say, but I'm too tired right now to say all of them. So I'm just gonna say this.....

Eminem is not a Satanist, no one has any proof of this, and people can listen to him if they want. I think he is one of the greatest rappers ever. I have almost all of his albums and I find no "offensive" content in them. He is simply sharing his beliefs and emotions in his own special way. But everyone misunderstands him *coughcoughlikesomechristianscoughcoughcough* and end up spewing hate towards him. Some rock artists out there cuss more than rappers do. So quit assuming that rap is bad and other music forms are so clean. I'm sick of hearing all these insults. Let's let people make whatever music they want to, good grief.

Some of those bands you listed (particularly Slipknot and Manson) aren't misunderstood...they are simply marketing shock material. Whether or not this music has much to offer the listener is related to this, but not neccessarily directly.

Eminem is a good lyricist (with a terrible flow, but anyway), but he fell off, and he's very rich because of it, and most of us would do the same thing.

"I've got so many ways to diss you that I'm playful with you
I will let a razor slit you 'til they have to staple stitch you
And everybody in this... place will miss you if you
Try to turn my facial tissue into a racial issue"

^ But he can be ridiculously nice when he wants to be.

And SlimShadyJB, nobody is attacking rap- only Eminem. People can hate Eminem without hating rap.

PS. Good luck with the rap career.

I think Eminem's older, more offensive material is his best. Care to share a satanist line in an Eminem song?

I wasn't saying he was a Satanist. I'm sorry if that's what you understood. The topic that night was Satanism, but they got to talking about violence. I was referring to the violence part. Sorry, if I didn't make that clear.

I'm not assuming that rap is bad. I listen to rap, Christian rap. I don't think other music forms are clean. Country music talks about sex, drinking, and cheating. And yes, some rock music is just as bad, if not worse. I agree with that. I'm not trying to seem hateful, I just don't get it. I don't see why you would want to fill your head with cussing. I'm not just targeting Eminem, he was just the main one they were showing. There are a lot of musicians that are just as bad.

lol... i know the guy that made this documentary. i used to know his daughter.

where did you see it? it was on tv?

needless to say, he's kind of 'anti-secular music'.

I saw it on Sky Angel. I kind of thought he might be 'anti-secular music'. I do like some secular music, but I don't listen to it. My parents don't want me to. I also realize that some of the secular music I like isn't the greatest. So, I just listen to Christian music.

What do you mean by saying he is a good lyricist? I don't really understand what you mean. Could you please define a good lyricist for me? Thanks.:help:

I really like Eminem. Listening to his music helps me so much when I'm depressed because I can understand his anger. I think that Eminem truly is musunderstood. I mean he has a heart or else he wouldn't be writing all those songs about his daughter. He just had a lot to get off his chest and music is his way of doing it.

Heh...yeah, I know He does claim to be and I have no doubt about that. However, I am not saying that he's misunderstood on those terms. I think they're misunderstood by christians about what they are saying in their songs. They automatically get judged by the words they use....or the violence they put in their songs. Eminem has good points in his songs, and he gets his feelings out through swearing...people don't understand it, but it helps him release his feelings: whether it be anger, sorrow, hurt, or just crazy stuff. Just like Marilyn Manson: He's known as some kind of 'sick freak' but really He's a person who has feelings, and in some of his songs He does express them. Yeah, quite a few of them are what you would call 'vulgar' but not all of them. He's one of my biggest role models.......and I know too many people take Him for the person He is on stage...however, as much as I find that fascinating, I also like how He knows what He believes, and He's also very intellegent. I look up to Him for that, whereas, so many people don't even understand it...

P.S. MY CF NAME IS NOT* TRUE...DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO IT....I WANT IT CHANGED. Just thought I'd let ya know that, before there's any conflict here, lol

It's more of a personal thing. Some people like a socio-political message, some people like a deeper, hidden meaning, some people like polysyllabic rhyming, some people like poetic imagery, some like all of the above; there is never going to be a "definition"- but then you knew that didn't you ;).
