Einstein was not only a great physicist but knew a thing or two about refrigerators having applied for a patent on a refrigerator design.

Today there is a renewed interest in Einstein's design for the storage of vaccines which may become even more important when a vaccine for COVID-19 is developed.

Of course, he probably saw plenty of interesting refrigeration patents in his work at the patent office.

Einstein was so good at his job he was able to complete a days work in 3-4 hours and spend the rest of his time secretly addressing problems in physics which puzzled him.
During his time at the patent office he independently worked out the subject of statistical mechanics but unlike the originators of the theory Gibbs and Boltzmann, went further to use it to explain matter is composed of atoms.
He addressed the problems of Maxwell-Lorentz electrodynamics which led him to the special theory of relativity.
Before he left the patent office Einstein had formulated the equivalence principle which was the first step in developing the general theory.
Einstein also developed the idea which he considered very revolutionary, light is composed of particles of energy, the photon.
