I'm sure this has already been beat to death, but I'm so enjoying The Desire of Ages (I'm half way thru)

I read a chapter first thing very morning.

She explains scripture so well, better than I can discover thru direct study of The Bible.

And Steps to Christ.

I've recently read that little book around two dozen times and get something more every time.

I'm reading her writings more than The Bible, mainly because her writings expound scripture so thoroughly.
It saves me a lot of research.

Is that a bad thing?

I have just finished reading the Bible cover to cover again- I have one more chapter in the book of Revelation which I am savoring and than plan to dive into a Ellen White book. I think I might read the Spirit of Prophecy alternating with re-reading the Bible.

My grandmother is giving me all her Ellen White books and I am excited to dive into them. My grandmother faced glowed like no other when reading either the Bible or an EGW book, which she read both as long as I can remember. She is close to a 100 now.

God bless!

A lot of people read commentaries and various scholars as well as reading the Bible. But if you read books like Great Controversy you will find that Ellen White points people back to the Bible repeatedly. You will see this in the book "Early Writings" as well. She has great respect for the "sola scriptura" principle where everything is to be tested against the Bible.

Also it is almost impossible to share your faith with someone outside of your denomination without having a great deal of Bible study backing up what you are sharing.

People in every denomination face the issue that they cannot easily share their faith with those not of their faith - just by quoting their own authors. People need a common accepted reference to work with - and that is the Bible.

Having said that - I have recommended books like "Desire of Ages" and other books -- to people looking for devotional material or encouragement etc no matter what denomination they are in at the time.
