  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

EC a middle ground

I started this thread maybe last cycle or cycle before ( been here a LONG time) Anyway many feel we should drop the EC in favor of a popular vote. What if instead we kept the EC, but every state work it like ME and NE. This way everyone could still have a vote while still allowing smaller areas to not be ruled by the larger areas. This may serve to get more people out to vote and would be fairer than the current winner take all system while still allowig people in rural areas to have more of a vioce than a regular popular vote would.

A popular vote is a better alternative regardless. More people in states that normally vote one way or another will vote if a popular vote were implemented and thus we will get a better view on what people actually want.

All the republicans in California should matter as well as all the democrats in Florida, Ohio and Texas.

The protection that states need from being run over by population is already present in the Senate.

The finer points of how we drew up the various states shouldn't benefit one ideological position over another.

I notice that even with the current system there is usually more red than blue on the map when I look at counties.

Right, but land doesn't vote, people do.

Here are the counties with larger populations than Wyoming:

How about we "compromise" and give each of them 2 senators and 3 electoral votes (or how ever many electoral votes they deserve).

reps are really better than the senate because reps do not respreant the whole states which funny are where all but two of the districts in each state come in.

Your premise is simply false that the congress districts are a better representation of the will of the people than the states.

Even better though would just be to ask the people directly.

There are WAY WAY too many people in this country to go around and asks everyone directly the closest it gets to make people vote.

if you want to see whats wrong with the US system, a president can get what is it like 23% of the popular vote and still win. Unlikly to ever happen, but you can't tell me thats not messed up. The bottom states in terms of population to compare to California have almost 2x's EC votes as California.

I would support an amendment to the Constitution that elected the President/Vice President by popular vote. Considering the current politicaL environment, I don't think it would fly. I don't think my idea of reducing EC votes by 2 for each State would fly either.
I think any amendment is DOA regardless of content with our current political climate.

60 years ago, in High School, we had a debate project regarding whether the Electoral College should be changed. I fiddled with the math and the States and came up with something similar to your figures, maybe a little higher %. Yeah, unlikely, but possible, more likely with 1 or 2 third party candidates.

Yes well, it's entirely possible, but what I was suggesting is just going with the popular vote and stopping all the artificial gamesmanship.

so that there would not be a winner take all system so the people in more rural areas would have more of a say. I am talking about ruraal areas of states not rural states the current system does that.

Why should rural voters have votes worth more than others?
