The word "angel" simply means messenger. But it is used of "angelic beings" as well.

Future from now, we see that Satan's angels are still called angels:

(Rev 12:9) And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Now, Satan was the annointed cherub that covereth (Ezek. 28), and he has most certainly lost that position.

Very good response RV! Yes, they are angels. We are warned to be careful because they can appear in the guise of an angel of Light but the way to identify them is to test them. Worship the name of the Lord and a real angel will gladly join you, a fallen angel will not.

When Satan, who was the highest angel, the highest created being, rebelled against God, he took with him a large number of the angels with him. Together their rebellion failed and they were cast out of heaven. Those fallen angels are demons. Angels and archangels of heaven have high powers of goodness. Demons have powers of evil ("principalites and powers"). There is a continual war in the invisible spirit world between God's faithful messengers and Satan's demonic host, but "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." (I John 4:4) God allows us to take part in spiritual warfare by the action of our prayers in the name of Jesus, and Jesus' authority is infinitely greater than satanic power.

As was said in a previous post, Christians must be very careful to remember that Satan's evil can appear as "an angel of light" -- very beautiful, seductive and appealing, the end of which is pain, suffering, and destruction however. According to the Bible, Satan's end is to be cast into a lake of fire, where he and his angels will be for the rest of eternity with no possibility of escape.
