  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Okay, here's my tale of woe. I love to play video games, particularly adventure and FPS games (though I love snowboarding, snowmobile, jet ski, "Extreme G" etc. type games as well). Anyway, as you can see from my age, I'm 50. What that means is that my hands are not as limber as they used to be and my brain just isn't functioning with the speed of an 18 year old's when it comes to split second decisions and reactions. And sadly, most adventure games are designed for kids with quick hands and minds capable of split-second strategy planning.

Modern gaming, at least as I see it, especially for the first person shooters and other adventure games, has become hard and harder to play. More complicated moves with the controller, and requiring faster thinking all around. I like to explore the environment, take my time, solve puzzles, do a little battle now and then, then get back to the exploring/puzzles. In other words, games like ICO were ideal for me but ICO is sort of one of a kind.

So what I'm asking you gaming fans is are there games out there that fit the bill as described above, that has more adventure and less killing of the bad guys. Yeah, I like to hack and slash with the best of them but not all the time. I don't want to constantly have to switch weapons, throw spells, go back to more weapons, load ammo magazines...all within 30 seconds of battle time. I liked the tombraider games but even those were getting a bit hard to control (speaking of getting the controller to do what I needed). I have played some games on the easy mode and occasionally slip into God-mode if it's too tough.

But I'd like you to suggest some games that are fun with environments that are rich and complex and control functions that aren't too difficult to master. I am playing more and more kid games because the adult ones are just getting too complicated. Don't get me wrong...I like playing Jak and Daxter or Ty or even Pacman 3D. But I'd like something with characters that look vaguely like real people and environments that are least similar to real places. Even games with really "easy" settings would fit the bill.

Any suggestions? Shadow of the Colossus is on my list. I've started Gun which is not TOO terrible but even there my hand motion can be a bit slow.

Sigh...I miss the old Doom and Duke Nuk'em days.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The depth of the world is incredible and you can do all kinds of exploring as there are tons of crypts, caves, dungeons, ruined forts, etc, etc. The NPC interaction is amazing as well and all NPCs have their own lives and do things on their own. The skill system is fun and it has just the right mix of action and exploration. It's all in how you want to play it too. When you open the control interface, it pauses so you can change spells or select scrolls/potions at your ease then resume when ready.

I have a Khajiit Infiltrator (custom class) character who can do pretty good toe to toe but I usually just creep around and snipe things and its so cool picking the locks on chests and gates and playing that way. Then sometimes I just want to charge through and bash stuff so I get on my orc Berzerker. He can't sneak for jack but then things that toss my kitty around drop pretty quickly with a spiked mace beating them in the head.

And I've barely scratched the surface of the game. Awesome game and it plays from first person perspective, though you can pull out to 3rd person with the click of a button.

Also, a classic that I highly recommend is System Shock 2. You might have to do some looking to find a copy but it is an awesome FPS/RPG hybrid and is so engrossing an creepy. It also will run on lower end systems, unlike Oblivion. I'd also recommend the Starwars: KOTOR games to anyone as well.

Actually, if you don't mind a monthly fee (and this game is worth it really) World of Warcraft isn't super fast paced...anyone can play it and it's a BLAST to play. You can jump in and jump out anytime you want, so it's not time demanding like many games of its type. It's a more laidback game.

I am told Prince of Persia is like Ico. They may have just been talking about the way you get to move around the world though. I'm not sure. They did say it was harder.

DragonQuest VII isn't too demanding, but it's turn based and you have to go through the menu to find what attack you'd like. I found it easy to navigate, and I'm fairly new to gaming. My parents never let me play when I was little and it wasn't until the past 3-4 years I've been looking at things. However, you can explore the world and if you have the repels (can't think of what they were called right now) then you can keep most of the lower mobs off you.

If you have a gamecube, I didn't have problems with Paper Mario. They always tell you the keys for the moves. It's the only gamecube game I've messed with besides MonkeyBall, but that isn't puzzlish, and it's all reflexes and controls.

Games that are heavy on exploring, but have no puzzles would be Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. These are all pretty much the same idea, but different worlds, and different units to build. They do require strategy, but I didn't find them too difficult.

For puzzle games plus exploring there is Myst and all of it's succeeding games. I'm not even sure how many Myst games there are now. Riven is related to this too.

World of Warcraft may also be a good option. Don't roll a melee fighter or a rogue. The attacks are positional and you have to constantly move to be in the right place.

Right, I don't know if I would suggest Prince of Persia, considering some of the puzzles require fast reflexes, though in general, I think the puzzles are amazingly done. Jade Empire isn't too bad, hte fighting might get a little intense, but for the most part (at least for me) you feel overly powerful, so all of the enemies feel so easy.

Well, maybe Prince of Persia Warrior Within, or even Two Thrones (I haven't played that one) but the first one seemed easy enough to me...
Do you have to do wall-run-jump combos in Sands of Time? Or jump up or down canyons?

Sometimes. I never finished it but early on, you have to do a wall-run then jump to a column.

Yeah, my daughter borrowed this game and I tried a little of it and found it a bit tough. Solving some of the problems was a little easier for me than for her (she's 14) but controller-wise, she was much quicker than me and adapted to the moves a little better. I finished the Harry Potter games (Prisoner of Azkaban) without any hassle and was okay with that one as far as controller skills and I guess that that one and ICO are the sort of level of skill that I enjoy (at least for maneuvering around and in battles). And of course, any game FPS that comes with an "easy" setting or has "GOD-MODE" in the cheat code can fit the bill for harder games. I finished Turok: Evolution that way. Your character can die but not in battle from knife or gun fire.

Oh for those who asked, I have Playstation 2 (won that one at a company party raffle), Gamecube (my husband's), and nintendo 64 (my kid's). I also play PC games (love ones like Myst). WoW was suggested but we can't afford on-line play and I have no time for it anyway. Full time job, house, husband, and 2 teens doesn't allow me much time for it.

I would recommend Final Fantasy X. I haven't played other games in the series so I can't really talk about those, but so far, FFX hasn't been too bad. If you don't know it, it's an RPG, so there's really nothing too fast paced about it. You can take time to think and the controls aren't too difficult. However the game does get progressively harder as it goes along, but with enough patience I think you could do it

For pure puzzle fun(read kill your brain fun) try myst..no fighting involved... beautiful scenery (plus all the myst sequals and counterparts. i.e Riven)
Morrowind is one of my favorites also...but that has a fair amount of fighting.... but most of that can be avoided I guess if you stay out of tombs and caves. I loved it for the exploration possibilies.

The Prince of Persia games are actually somewhat forgiving with reflexes. Sure, you need to be pretty close, but if it's button mashing you're worried about, don't worry that much. Two Thrones does have a bit of mashing, especially in the Dark Prince sequences.

I would also recommend Oblivion, although Morrowind is a good choice too. Morrowind does have all that awful dice-rolling stuff, so you can find yourself hacking away at something a foot away and constantly miss. Oblivion requires a more strategic approach, mixing up ranged, light, and power attacks with blocking. Not much in the way of crazy fast reflexes, either.

Yeah, I love Myst. I have all the games by now, I think though haven't played them all yet. But I don't get much "computer time" which is where I'd have to play them.

Don't get me wrong...I don't mind the fighting, just not having scores of folks firing from everywhere, charging down on me, or worse than that, creepy zombies that don't die after a few shots.

Well, when the Revolution comes out, the new weird controller it has should help a little.... hopefully. I am happy you like to play games. It sounds scarry to me to think that when I get older, I may not like games.......or maybe even might start to like country music (shudder). But you are hope!!
