  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think one point that is missed in the debate...is that most churches celebrate Easter every day anyway...I know the Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions doe...and many Protestants also do as well!

The idea of a set clander was aimed at binding the community together in a common life...something we seemed to have lost! However, I think on a grand scvale this is probably not a very important issue...Christians are being persecuted...people are starving...Christ is still calling us to His passion...and to the passion of others!

Let us then each make our own peace with this issue and move onto something more important! If one church failed to join the host in comemorating Easter in a more socially significant way...it of no great concern!

Some men have special days that they observe, and others treat all days the same. This is a fact and scripturally acceptable.

Now, my question to you is WHY would a church have to go with the flow and preach that Christ Jesus was raised on a day that other Christians observe when it is an established fact that such day is not correct????

Consider Easter in 2005. This was in March because it is the established day of most Christians. But, in actuallity, it is more reasonable to state that Jesus was crucified on the 14th of Nisan and rose on the 16th of Nisan (or even the 17th of Nisan). Therefore, since today -- April 26th, 2005 -- is the 17th of Nisan, why did not congregations meet today or yesterday and celebrate Christ's resurrection??? Did you???? Or did you do so in March? Why in March and not during the fullmoon of the month of Nisan??

16th of Nisan?
17th of Nisan?
Easter on the Gregorian calendar?

Which day is it?
Does it even matter???

I am in full agreement here. It really does not matter as to which day is which. I am one of those who holds that each day is considered equal before God... just as I also hold that all food is acceptible, and that dancing and music is not a sin.

And I also agree - the "Easter" that most Christians celebrate today is during a false time that is rather random... For me, I celebrated last Sunday with my church, but it was also a birthday celebration and a commissioning service at the same time.

I apologize if what I said may have come across as a slur against your denomination, as I did not intend it to be that at all. It was more a statement that I am not surprised that the CoC would not celebrate on any given day because "tradition" and "intellectualism" is considered evil in most of the CoC churches that I have come in contact with... and being as Easter (and Passover) are traditions, I equated it and assumed such things.

The point that I think the OP was trying to make, though, was that it was a concern especially for the C + E crowd (namely those who only attend church on Christmas or Easter, or who would only consider attendance on these days), that if anyone in these crowds came in on Easter with questions behind why Christians celebrate and what Christians believe, that there would be a huge disappointment. What I would do if I were in such a situation is to address the issue and explain the history behind everything as well as describe what we Christians do believe (while stating that that day was not the true day of the Resurrection, but also mentioning that there is the Resurrection!!!)... That way, the Gospel is spoken with the relevance of the times and the people (both churched and unchurched) are educated about the Truth, which is Christ, as revealed through Scripture.

Pascha (Easter) for the Orthodox Church is this Sunday. It always follows the Jewish Passover. I know the Gregorian calendar is more accurate scientifically, but the Julian Calendar is more accurate on setting the date of Easter.
