  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it correct that the Eastern Orthodox reject the Catholic teaching of purgatory? How does the EO view the Intermediate state, and how does it differ from the Catholic Church?

Lots of different things though I haven't studied their views extensively, but they don't have official places like Limbo, their is more a recognition that the afterlife is something of a mystery for us on this end of eternity.

They do have some interesting teachings that I will link to on things like "The River of Fire" and Toll houses that are not universal but popular with some groups like the Russian Orthodox.

The River of Fire - Kalomiros - Glory to God for All Things

The Orthodox Church does not categorically reject the idea of purgatory but neither is it a defined teaching in the Church. As @Pavel Mosko said above, you'll find differing ideas on it. If you read the canons of the Synod of Jerusalem of 1672 you'll find a direct reference to purgatory but the synod was held in direct opposition to the Protestant Reformation and was sympathetic to the Roman Church. In the end, it may be or it may not be.

I personally believe there is in fact an intermediate state between life and salvation but I don't go into any of the specifics of it because I don't know what they are, see 1 Cor 3:12-15 and Zechariah 13:9. In any event it doesn't change any of our obligations and it's good to know that there is something so we can prepare for it.
