We moderns like to think we're emancipated with our lax sexual mores, but I think that in ages where entire families shared one room the kids would have been well aware how babies were made.

I was a bit naive myself, but I was surprised when my conservative old Pastor, who grew up on a farm, said to me once "I knew how babies were made by the time I was four!"

Yeah, I'm sure there were practical considerations. You had to bundle and stay warm so you could get up early and work on Good Friday.
