  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Change in Earth’s Gravity

A mysterious shift in Earth’s gravity Earth’s field
is getting flatter, and scientists
don’t know why

THE SCIENTISTS who noticed the change and report it in Friday’s issue of the journal Science suspect Earth itself may be flattening out, with the oceans rising near the equator, but they aren’t sure.

Since Cox and Chao submitted their paper to the journal, they’ve continued to look into the mystery and are more confident that the ocean is behind it all. “But we need more data,” Cox said.
That data could come from NASA’s GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellite mission, which will provide the most precise measurements ever made of Earth’s gravity field. GRACE launched in March.

Grace… Good name choice! :)

Taking this to its logical conclusion....

....overheard from a conversation, some day far into our future....

"Say, did you see this article about how archaeologists uncovered an old science book from the 20th century? They haven't been able to translate the language yet, but it includes pictures of the earth as being round or spherical, which implies they actually believed it wasn't flat!"

"No kidding? I wonder if they believed evolution, too."

"Nah. If they were intelligent enough to make books, they couldn't have been THAT stupid."

Heh. Yeah, I agree. Creationism and flat-earthism usally get along pretty well.

Ok, i just read the article, and I can see how this makes sense. The force of gravity is not only a function of mass, but a function of radius. Since the earth is elliptical, it has a smaller radius vertically than horizontally. Thus, the gravitational force at the poles are greater than at the equator. This imbalance in forces will innevitably drive the process until some equilibrium point is reached. Will the earth become "flat"? Doubtfull. ( Just look at other planets. Are any of them flat?) Will it get a little flatter than what it is now? probably.

not like anyone cares. :idea:

It'll never become flat, fluctuations in spherical integrity are probably the norm, and we are just now able to detect them. I believe the mass and rotation speed of the Earth and all planets and stars will keep them spherically concentric, I believe it is the law of mass, acceleration and gravity.

If the Earth turns flat, the evolutionists and atheists will have to bow down to the deity responsible and eat a little crow. :D

Badfish: I do use Microsoft works to put together some of my post, when I am using Internet information from different sources. Also I use works so that I do not tie up phone line, then I cut and past.

But the post looks clear on my screen. It is not how you quoted it.
Is this how everyone is seeing my words or is it a problem between you and me?

I am going to copy and paste what I just wrote to see if there is a difference to you.

ANY DIFFERENCE??? :scratch:

F = G m1 m2 / r^2

The equation I wrote is a slightly modified version of yours there. Instead of calculating the force of attraction between 2 bodies of mass, the equation I wrote is simply for one body (the surface of earth). I did make an error though. It's a calculation of accerlation due to gravity on the surface of the earth, and not the force of attraction:

a=gM/r^2

Thus, the mean radius of the earth is 6.37E6 meters. So, say the vertical radius is about 6E6 meters and the horizontal radius is 6.5E6 meters, then:

gravity on the poles = 11.07 m/s^2

gravity on the equator = 9.44m/s^2

average calculation of gravity is usually 9.8m/s^2, so this makes sense.

Thus, a person (or anything for that matter) will weigh more on the poles than the equator. It is then reasonable to assume that the poles are compacting the earth more than that of the equator, which in turn will purpetuate this "flattening" of the earth.

I will give you blessings for your awareness of that equation. :)

Well, if you believe in science then the Earth and sun are about 5 billion years old; the sun will go nova in about 5 billion years time, taking the Earth with it ... so maybe it's just middle-age spread!

(Stormy, try using Notepad instead of Word; it contains no formatting so what you see is what you get)

  The Sun will not go nova in 5 billion years.  It will, however, balloon into a nice red giant around that time.

  The sun will never go nova. It lacks the mass. After ballooning to a red giant, the outer layers will continue to expand. Nuclear fusion will shut down in the core (as it becomes carbon, and thus no longer fusable in this case). The outer layers will drift off, becoming a nebula, and the core will radiate it's stored heat for billions of years, as a white dwarf.

Much beter though it would be beter to use:

a=GM/r^2

since "g" is aften used for acceleration due to gravity which is not what you want.  But that is a nitpick since any symbol can be used for any variable so long as one is consistent.

In case anyone is interested, Rising_Sun's equation can be obtained by substituting f=ma into Newton's equation for gravity which I gave in a previous post.  One of the m's cancels out (the one we interpret as the mass of the Earth).

I knew it was something apocalyptic!

* Sorry, Stormy, I meant copy and paste anything off the net into Notepad first (this strips away the formatting), then copy and paste *that* into the Reply box.
