When is the earliest evidence of an interpretation of the Holy Scriptures that holds that Baptism is only symbolic ?

Primary sources only please.

Please do not debate the Scriptures or give your personal interpretation of them. I am looking for evidence that the Scriptures were historically interpreted that way.

Good question, Oblio. But by asking for actual evidence of when the Scriptures were first interpreted in that way and asking people not to offer their (modern) personal opinions on what they think Scripture means, you're going to be taking the fun out of this for a whole lot of folks! :D

An aside. How long do you think it will be before someone tries to hijack this thread and use it to try to smear either Catholicism, Orthodxy . . . or both?

BAPTISM of WATER and of SPIRIT
This is my understanding.

The idea of the WATER BAPTISMAL

is the BEING BORN/COMING OUT/BEING SAVED

from the WATER.

Water is the only weapon YHSHWH GOD has ever used against us.

HE destroyed the inhabitants of the earth with water.

Then, HE PROMISED never to use water, as a weapon again.

GEN 9:11

And I will establish my covenant with you,

neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood;

neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.

GEN 9:12

And God said,

This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you

and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

GEN 9:13

I do set my bow in the cloud,

and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

GEN 9:14

And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth,

that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:

GEN 9:15

And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you

and every living creature of all flesh;

and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

GEN 9:16

And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it,

that I may remember the everlasting covenant

between God and every living creature of all flesh

that is upon the earth.

GEN 9:17

And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant,

which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

_______

MT 3:13

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John,

to be baptized of him.

MT 3:14

But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee,

and comest thou to me?

MT 3:15

And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now:

for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness
.

Then he suffered him.

MT 3:16

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water:

and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him,

and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove,

and lighting upon him:

MT 3:17

And lo a voice from heaven, saying,

This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

JESUS was submerged and when HE came out of the water,

HOLY SPIRIT "LIGHTED UPON HIM".

HIS WHOLE MINISTRY BEGAN.

_______

1PET 3:18

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust,

that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh,

but quickened by the Spirit:

1PET 3:19

By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

1PET 3:20

Which sometime were disobedient,

when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah,

while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is,

eight souls were saved by water.

1PET 3:21

The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us

(not the putting away of the filth of the flesh,

but the answer of a good conscience toward God,)

by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

1PET 3:22

Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God;

angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

My belief is

that we, as YHSHWH'S PEOPLE,

recognize HIS COVENANT

when we SUFFER/SUBMIT to WATER BAPTIZM.

HIS GIFT of HIS HOLY SPIRIT

in US , HIS BODY, is the BAPTISM of HIS HOLY SPIRIT.

Our SUFFERING/SUBMITTING to the BAPTISMAL of WATER

is recognizing HIS COVENANT with US, HIS BODY/HIS PEOPLE.

GEN 9:16

And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it,

that I may remember the everlasting covenant

between God and every living creature of all flesh

that is upon the earth.

_______

Let US SUFFER/SUBMIT to YHSHWH'S WAYS,

as HE DID.

MT 3:15

And Jesus answering said unto him,

Suffer it to be so now:

for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness
.

Then he suffered him.
_______

Let us sumit (suffer) to HIS WORD
and we began to fulfill HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS.

LOVE, RICOEL
