  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I agree and I do know that just the impulses I am getting about these things is proof that the Spirit is speaking to me... Just hard to deal with. If you saw one of my earlier posts, I know I have A LOT of pride and that causes me to think I should overcome these things quicker than is happening, but by God's grace will get better.

Patience is a virture...a Godly mentor once told me, "tie another knot in your rope and hang on!" Endurance, not giving up begging God to come and do what HE promised is crucial...remember the parable about the guy coming to the door late night and pounding on the door? He won't go away until he gets what he came for. That has to be us when we pursue HIS promises. So, hang in and hang on! He will come and deliver you! That is real faith, the hanging on...and praise God!! Yes, by God's grace it WILL get better! That is what our hope is in!! And, HIS Word is true.

Praying for you!

How does one die to themselves? What practical advice would you give to someone seeking such advice?
Posting blind - no time to read 3 pages of responses, so if this has already been said - my apologies.

Here is how Paul told us to do it:

Phil 2.3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;
4 do not look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

That has been said per se, but not explicitly that I have seen. It is a good reminder that we should look out for the interests of others, not only in the physical but in the spiritual. The nature of my OP was how exactly to do that...

It is easy to say I want to help this person or that person have enough food or clothes, definitely I want you to know Jesus, but how to overcome that initial panic that hits when we need to share the gospel.

I definitely like to do this... find ways to turn conversations to Christ. So it is no longer me just blurting out Jesus Jesus Jesus, but rather find a way to introduce Jesus into a conversation. It is rather easy to go about it that way.

But honestly, if I can't show them how that I care for them. That they aren't just some other person I'm preaching at, no preaching is going to help. It might, but honestly people listen more readily if they feel like I genuinely care for them. That is what is important, so yes, I do agree that looking out for the well being of others is very important to dying to myself.

Got off on a rabbit trail, my apologies :)

Unless a kernel of wheat dies, it cannot be transformed into a stalk of wheat. One may risk his life for Christ in order for the world to be transformed into a better place.

A peach tree in the wild cannot produce market quality fruit. In an orchard it is fertilized, treated with pesticides and pruned. A peach tree sometimes put out two branches reaching for the same spot in the sun. They became tangled and partially shade each other out. The leaves need the sun for branches to produce fruit. A pruner will look at the tangled mess and prune out the least healthy branch giving the sunlight to the better formed branch. God can correct a person. The person must be willing to give up bad habits and form good ones.

I remember watching YouTube videos about the Welsh Revival of 1904-1905. An older student who had worked in the coal mines took a leave of absence from a theological college to preach in churches. Evan Robert's name became known across a region. The press was writing about him. Hundreds went to hear him preach about the Holy Spirit. Sales of alcohol in pubs decreased. The crime rate went down. Jails were not as full. People stopped uttering profanity, lewdness and curses. They were being transformed. He was not preaching about himself to the crowds.

I think dying to oneself means just relying on God day to day to heal ones pains and wounds.

How does one die to themselves? What practical advice would you give to someone seeking such advice?

Hello,

A friend came up with this to me, "Spiritual Suicide". Or how you put it dying to yourself.

It would have to do with "those who do not obey the gospel" (2 Thessalonians 1:8). It is referring to those who believed (past tense for a reason) in Christ but do not "keep His commandments" (John 14:15). I put believed in past tense because if you "believe" (action word John 6:29) you are obeying continuously or remaining faithful/running the race with endurance. Not obeying, is to not love God and not keep his commandments and it is a "dead faith" (James 2:14-26).

One example of your belief aka obeying and keeping a command, would be getting baptized and spreading the word of God (Mark 16:15-16). If someone were NOT to do this, you could say it is a dead faith or "spiritual suicide".

I hope I explained this understandably.

When we are in a situation where the benefit of the other conflicts with the benefit of ourselves we die to ourselves by choosing to benefit the other at our own expense.

In imitation of Christ Jesus we lay down our own well being, our own life, in Love, trusting our Father to meet the shortfall.

This takes faith and should come from the Spirit, it can also be excruciating.

I agree but that is a very bland answer from scripture. Not that it is bad, I'm not saying that but there is no practicality to it.

What practical advice do we give someone who wants to die to themselves but can not seem to do so?

Such as "denying oneself" etc

Your turn your gaze from self to Christ.

I think of it in terms of the ways of living we have that are contrary to His will, as expressed in the words of Christ to us. One thing most people need to do at some point in time is to truly forgive someone, not just in a partial way, but from the heart --

34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35 "This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart."

See that wording? It's powerful and clear -- we must truly forgive, even down in our hearts! It's not enough just to say we forgive, or not show outward signs of a grudge. We must also forgive fully.

And most everyone at some point faces a need to do this, and many have not done it. We can and should pray for aid when we cannot get there. It's crucial.

One might pray something like "Father, help me forgive him completely in my heart. Father, change my heart, so that I might love this person." and because we know this is 100% aligned to God's will as expressed by Christ, we can have then have faith that our prayer will be given to us, as Christ instructed us to believe as we pray.

In like manner, all the ways of our living that are against His will we must surrender. We confess them, we repent sincerely, from the heart, wanting sincerely to not continue in this sin, and thus we return to Him, back into His grace. Also, the Lord's prayer is very powerful when you pray it sincerely, because it is about key things you need in life.

Just as I must die to the old self that wants to hold onto grudges, so also I must die to the old self that is greedy, or the old self that is unwilling to love all of my brothers and sisters, indiscriminately. Without judging them.

We have to die to our ego, our pride, our prejudices.

We cannot hide behind other people in our church, for example, if they have a prejudice or are judging. Christ said --

13“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

This means that in a church not all will choose to totally follow Him, and do as He said. We must avoid thinking to ourselves that it's okay to not love someone because others in our church don't....

But, wonderfully, following Him is easier than we think at first. After that key moment of confessing and repenting, we enter back into communion with Him, and it is *not* as hard as it seems before we repent --

29 "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Hi farouk, You sent a message on my profile. I don't know how to reply as I do not have any options to comment. The only option I have is Report. Maybe because I am a newbie on this forum that's why I do not have options to reply, i dunno. Anyway, regarding the avatar that you asked about, it is a symbol created for our book. It is a combined symbols of Alpha, Omega and the Sword of the Lord. We are a small fundamental baptist church in the Philippines but we are Bible-based group of Christians and the book was created from our Sunday School discussions. We made a book intended for selling as we are supporting several missionaries in our country. We believe that missionaries are the frontliners on preaching the Gospel, the Lord Jesus as there are plenty of souls that needs to be reached. You can check our book at

How does one die to themselves? What practical advice would you give to someone seeking such advice?

Blind post. Sorry if I repeat what has already been said.

Jesus said,

Matthew 16:24-25
24 ..."If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

How is this done? How does one crucify one's self? Well, think about crucifixion for a moment. Can a man fully crucify himself? If he could bear the incredible pain, he might get a nail through his feet and maybe another through one hand, but how would he nail his final, free hand to the cross? Doing so would require another pair of hands! And then how would he get the cross upright in the ground? Crucifying yourself is impossible!

This is as true spiritually as it is physically. No one can self-crucify. It's impossible. So, then, why did Jesus say what he does in the verses above? Did he not intend for us to deny ourselves and take up the cross of self-sacrifice, of death to Self, and live a crucified life? Most definitely he intended we should live this way! But not by dint of our own effort. Our crucifixion is something God does for us - and to us. Paul the apostle explains:

Galatians 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

When Christ died on the cross some 2000 years ago, you died there with him. You were crucified with Christ just as Paul and every born-again believer was (and is). This was a spiritual event. You will never feel physically that you were crucified. There are no holes in your hands and feet, no residual pain from a wound in your side. Spiritually, though, the reality of your new life in Christ is that you were co-crucified with Jesus. And so Paul writes,

Romans 6:1-2
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?

The blood of Jesus cleanses us from the stain of sin but the Cross frees us from the source of sin which is Self. Our carnal, fleshly, worldly, spiritually-unregenerate Self - our "old man" as Paul calls it - is rendered powerless on the cross of Christ. It is nailed there just as surely as Jesus was.

Romans 6:5-7
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.

The Big Question then is: Do you believe it? Will you "reckon it so" as Paul urged the Roman Christians to do? Will you count on the truth of your death to Self, your death to the power of sin, and by faith begin to act in accord with it, to live in denial of your Self? You will have to do this in spite of both an absence of feeling that you are dead to sin and an experience of the same. This is what it means to "walk by faith, not by sight." But as you count on your crucifixion with Christ, the reality of it will begin to be seen in how you live every day.

I would say also that it is not enough simply to know and believe what Scripture says about your crucifixion with Christ. The exercise of faith in this spiritual reality must be coupled with a constant surrender to God. No life unyielded to God will ever experience the full truth of death to Self. So it is Paul writes,

Romans 6:13
13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Romans 12:1
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

Selah.

I agree but how? What does that mean? How do you explain that to a newborn in Christ?

Does a newborn baby need instructions on how to get milk from his mother's breast?

You are overcomplicating this.

By living to serve God with all our heart. To stop sowing to the flesh but laying those seeds elsewhere. Living life in His spirit and His power.

Dying to self reaps so many rewards than one doesn't expect. The flesh is a nasty thing really producing only conflict in us and pride, 'needs', confusion.

It might not seem that way when you live with a clean conscience but you don't have the gift of peace, love and joy and perfect contentment in it's entirity when the flesh is alive. It is very freeing to live obediently to Him.

But like, how do you reduce the "you" and increase the Christ?
I don't know you or your life, but here are a few suggestions.

Even though tithing is not required, the things we give money too allows good things to be done. Jesus said to "Care for the orphans and widows". I think if we find a good organization and give money sometimes that can be good for us, because it teaches us to give something of value to someone else and then that money we do not have.

Sometimes I just smile at the people in the world that you know most people look down on. I say "Hi " and at least try to show them that someone does not think that they are too good to speak to them. A smile and saying "May God bless you" are very small, but can change someone's whole day.

Give of something that it hurts you to give, that you do not want to give. You don't have to give away your car or computer, but say something that you bought for yourself that you really like, but you know soomeone else would like it too. Just give it away.

How does one die to themselves? What practical advice would you give to someone seeking such advice?
Brother, it is good to see you posting again. I know you have gone through some rough waters. I am in the midst of white water class 5 rapids myself right now.

As to your question, and some of the replies, one thing I think we overlook is that self canbot crucify self. As the old adage goes, we might be able to mail oir feet to the dross. We might be able to nail one hand to the cross. But how does one get the other hand nailed?

I will share again what I have shared often. Once seen, once stepped into, ones life will nevee be the same. The amswer was exactly what God showed me in a visitation ten years ago, when I was at the end of my rope, without any more theories to try, with no hope of ever truly dying to my lust filled self nature.

The answer was found in Romans 6. Paul tells us that we mist know two immutable truths.

1) When Christ died, so did we. The old us is dead. It does not need to die.it died when Jesus died.

2) When Christ rose to newness of life, so did we. We are not to try to be new. We Re new, right now.

And our minds say "Ok then, why do I not see it? Why do I feel still at times..... most times.... like I am still a failure, still the same old man I was.

And what is the answer. Why do we not "cross over Jordan" and walk in the promised land? I will ask you, and others reading this excellent post, what God asked me that night.

Have you ever done what I instructed Paul to do?

And then God simply opened my eyes. What did Paul say immediately after these two truths we must know?

"Therefore, reckon yourself dead unto sin and alive unto God."

We as the church have had this truth hidden from our eyes ever since the grievous wolves came in as Paul predicted afted his passing over to glory. There is something we ar asked to DO.

What? Try harder? Fast? Memorize? Work? Resist temptation with fingernails dug in, miserable but not sinning, only to eventually give in..... again? No, He asks us to do the only thing He says thst truly pleases Him. He asks us to believe that these two truths are true for US. NOW.

And when a man does reckon this to be true.... add them to his spiritual bank account, with no visible change, with no chanfe of feeling, his good fight of fsith has really begun. And it is a fight he is destined to win.

Satan is the accuser of the brethren, right? I believe his greatest weapon is his accusations but there is a twist. He whispers in our ears that we are sinners, we are still the same old men with the same old flaws, that we will never change, but he does not say "You are a crumby worthless self driven failure. No, no. He whispers "I am a ....." and he does it in OUR voice!

It is then that the battle ensues. We counter that thought with the shield of faith held high. We are new creatures, right now. We are dead to self right now. And rhus, the words out of our mouths.... our testimony.... is that he is lying, and that we are new creatures in Christ, not trying to become new.

Do we immediately see outwardly this truth manifested? Do birds cone and light ob our shoulders as we walk? LOL. I wish. No. Remember, the law tries to change us from the outside inward, so we scrub at our external flaws, and never ever get to our inner man, our heart. It remains stained.

But not so with the new covenant. It starts as a tiny seed of purity at the venter of who we are. Novmatter how dark, how stained, how sinful our outer man has bevome through years of living as old natured beings, who are we?
Our core, who we truly are, is new.

Now if we slip, does it mean we are not new? That our self nature is still alive, and kicking and in control? Far from it. We ARE new regardless, but our enjoyment of it is blocked by our unbelief. So if we slip backwards, we do not vow to "do better next time". We can't. We won't. We will walk again as Romans 7 prisoners. No, we get up, dust ourselves off, repent of our slip and more importantly, our wavering faith as to who God has made us, and we stand again on the truth. We ARE new right now. We ARE dead to self. Right now.

And if we do so, God promises that we will become established in that faith, and become unwavering saints, walking pleasing to Him in all things.

One last point. We are told in Romans 8 to yield ourselves to God, but how difficult it is for us to do so. So we eventually settle down, line up with all the others, and confess "We are just sinners, always will be, till Jesus splits the sky." But we have overlooked seven critical words, words that change EVERYTHING. And what are they?

We are told to yild ourselves to God ....
as those who are alive from the dead.

It is time we awake and light our lamps, and BE who we really already are. A new day is dawning on His very sleepy, very confused, very lukewarm people. We are about to stand up as new creatures and overcome by not only the blood of the lamb but also by the words of OUR testimony.

Blessings to you, dear brother. If I can be of any assistance or answer any questions you might have, feel free to ask thrm or PM me. Free indeed is about to become real to us.... all of us. The bride is waking up, glory to God!

Gideon
