Hi there!

I am not yet a parent, but was watching Oprah the other day and saw something on there called "Dunstan Baby Language". It looked fantastic!

Basically this woman discovered that babies (regardless of gender/race), up until 3 months, all the make the same sounds to tell people that they are: hungry, tired, needing to be burped, uncomfortable, and having lower stomach issues. She's put out a DVD to help parents understand what there babies are saying to them.

Have no idea what I'm talking about and want more info?

Search "dunstan baby" on YouTube for testimonials

Is there anyone out there who's tried it? What did you think? Is it as great as it looks?

Thanks in advance

The hospital gave me her first DVD, BUT I haven't had time to watch it yet. :sorry: I'm not sure about every baby, but I know I can generally distinguish between my son's different cries and know what he wants.

Every mother learns her baby. I haven't seen this particular dvd but the theory has been around for yonks in different guises. In Africa, for example, mother's learn to know when their baby will defecate & hold them away from themselves in plenty of time. A mother who can't do this is considered a bad mother, which throws an interesting light on western culture where not too many of us could do this. Like most of these things there is some truth but take it with a grain of sand.

I also watched it and thought it was excellent. The theory behind it is very logical (eg: when a baby is hungry they'll push their tongue to the roof of their mouth like a sucking motion, so a when it's a hungry cry it's a cry with their tongue pushed to the roof of their mouth that makes that "neh" sound).

I do agree though that a mother learns her child's cries. Although I think it could be very helpful for new mothers who are very anxious and highly strung.

I had every intention of buying these dvds before i became a mum.

however now that i have my bubs i realise it really isn't necessary if you spend enough time with your child you will learn their cries.

I guess it would work well for people who work 100 hours a week or who kids are always with a nanny.

I've seen her and personally I think it's a bunch of bunk, just another way to make money. You know how we parents get with books and DVD's when we have issues we need help on or want to learn more as a parent. Some people will buy anything to help them so this is a perfect audience to target. As a mother you have your instincts, I would personally would rather rely on that.

Thats true, but sometimes Hannah would cry and I just couldnt figure out what was wrong with her. I tried this ladys techniques and i was able to listen to Hannahs cry and figure it out.

I am skeptical. I know Maya wants to eat because she sort of smacks her mouth with a whimper and then when I pick her up she starts trying to latch onto my arm and she only does that when she is hungry. If she starts to whimper and I pick her up and she's tired then she looks expectantly at the correct door for me to go through where she can nap. No really. If you pay attention you will get to know your baby and what they need. It does sound like a waste of money to me, there are so many great books out there I say don't waste time on this one! :)

Totally agree with you on this one girls! Parents just need to rely a little more on there instincts and pay more attention to their children.
