Ron Johnson says mouthwash can kill COVID-19. Manufacturer of Listerine, medical experts say there's no evidence yet to prove that.

I was of the opinion for several years that Ron Johnson of Wisconsin was the dumbest U.S. Senator. Then Tommy Tuberville appeared on the scene and threatened to take over Senator Ron's spot in the rankings. But Senator Ron has fought back valiantly, doing his best to retain his position at the top of the Stupid Senator list. The most recent example is his claim that antiseptic mouthwash will stop the COVID virus. Scientists, doctors and even the manufacturers of mouthwash say NO. It may reduce the viral load in your mouth, but are you going to gargle every time you speak? And what about the viruses in your nose, your lungs, your blood stream, etc.? Mouthwash will not cure COVID, prevent one from getting it, nor prevent one from spreading it.

He added to the insanity by claiming that NIH scientists are telling us to "do nothing". In his mind, getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, utilizing social distancing, and getting tested are "doing nothing"?

Ron Johnson, no need to worry; you aren't close to losing your tin crown of Dumbest U.S. Senator.

At least he didn't say one should drink or inject mouthwash, like another guy was suggesting back in 2020.

From your link:

In a statement to the Journal Sentinel, Johnson said he was not suggesting vitamins or mouthwash was a replacement for COVID-19 vaccines.

"I did not say that taking vitamins, using mouthwash, would be a replacement for the vaccine, should you choose to get one. There are multiple studies that say mouthwash may reduce viral load," Johnson said. "Even Dr. Fauci said, ‘I would not mind recommending, and I do it myself, taking vitamin D supplements.’ I continue to be amazed at the resistance to anything that might reduce the severity of COVID-19 symptoms.”
Is Fauci the dumbest also?

Debunked two years ago - again all you have to do is read the comment in context of what the President was saying. Repeating the error does not make it become accurate.

Oh! Watch out! Some folks get up in arms if you don't quote EXACTLY what the other guy said. EVEN THOUGH what he said was JUST as insane, they seem to suggest either that a)It's not that crazy and pretty reasonable or b)YOU are the problem because YOU hate him and misquote him (thereby not having to justify the guy's nonsense).

You have to understand, there are voter who don’t want ivy league education, they want politician who talk like them, think like them. They find Harvard graduate Obama not so “Middle America” ( remember Sarah Palin?) Ron Johnson, a senator from my proud state speaks like “Middle America”.

"So supposing we hit the body with a tremendous — whether it's ultraviolet or just a very powerful light — and I think you said that hasn't been checked because of the testing," Trump said, speaking to Bryan during the briefing. "And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or some other way, and I think you said you're going to test that, too."

He added: "I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning? As you see, it gets in the lungs, it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that."

No, Fauci is not. Rather, his is a voice of rational sanity.

My doctors also recommend various supplements, including Vitamin D. Johnson appears to want us to try various "over-the-counter" remedies and preventatives. The statement quoted in post #2 is his defense for what he had said earlier. He was backtracking due to the pushback from many places. He still talked about getting a vaccine "should you choose". To me that's the equivalent of saying "if you choose not to protect your own health and life, the life and health of your family, or of anyone else you come in contact with."

There are many, many people who are dealing with the long term effects of COVID. Your case may be mild, no worse than the flu, but it could leave behind significant ongoing health issues. This is borne out by medical reports and by my own personal knowledge. And mouthwash, vitamins or chicken noodle soup will not prevent those.

We hear about how severely ill COVID patients are filling the ER and ICU units in many places, and around the world, that places a great strain on our medical systems. But those who survive may end up dealing with medical issues for the rest of their life, placing an additional huge strain on the health care system for a long, long time.

Apparently, Senator Ron doesn't care about any of that.

Hey! I'm Middle America too, from your part of the country, and talk and think like most of the people I know who are as well. Definitely not like Senator Ron, who appeals to the lowest of the low common denominator. And keep in mind that most of the recent presidents have had an Ivy League education, including Republicans.

If Johnson speaks like "Middle America" we're in bigger trouble than I realized.

You don’t need “ over-the-counter” treatment or ‘alternative” treatment for Covid-19. There are already proven treatment out there – Vaccine and FDA approved treatment. But many in the country don’t want to do any of that, they want something which “liberal elite” not recommending – like medicine for horses.

Thank you for wonderfully illustrating my point and the debunking the lie by giving a direct in context quote. Most people with a working knowledge of English can easily see there were no instructions for people to go out and inject themselves. NO, he was asking questions of the doctors present, not giving instructions. That is why he actually turned and looked at them while speaking.

I am an Information Technology architect for a Healthcare organization. If I go to our next staff meeting and ask all my fellow IT specialist “ should we worry about computer virus in our network, may be we should look into that”. You know what gonna happen to me? My boss, the CIO will call me out of the meeting and say “ I don’t think you belong in this team if you don’t know ‘computer virus” is harmful or not, I will transfer you to none technical department”.

POTUS is standing in front national audience and asking doctors “ Should we inject disinfectant in our body ?” Maybe he doesn’t belong there in the first place. No wonder American people overwhelmingly rejected his 2nd term. He may not said “ people should inject disinfectant”, but brining up such a stupid question on national audience prove “Office of US Presidency” is not for him. People who doesn’t find his question stupid but defend that moment, I know where they belong .. well .. lets leave that up-to imagination!

You already have clearly demonstrated by using his direct quote, that he said no such thing.

I can't help your understanding or comprehension, but I do understand English quite well.

I can see the difference between:

~ so it would be interesting to check that." - Direct Quote
and

~ should we inject disinfectant into our bodies - Someone's interpretation

you even acknowledge the error in the third sentence:

~ He may not have* said “ people should inject disinfectant”
*edited for grammatical clarity only

It’s ok you see his comment differently then I. None of that matter. Trump is not president. Praise God.

It does seem outrageous that so many in American politics are diabolical simpletons. As bad as the UK Tory party is they are at least cleverly diabolical.

Okay, let's take the full quote and analyze:

“Standard gargle, mouthwash, has been proven to kill the coronavirus. If you get it, you may reduce viral replication. Why not try all these things?”

Okay, if you put the virus in pure mouthwash I am pretty sure that you would kill it. But if you put any human cell in pure mouthwash for an extended period of time it would probably kill that cell too. But there does not appear to be any mechanism for mouthwash to affect the virus if taken and used as directed. At them very most it might temporarily clean the palate and upper throat area of the virus. But the body is constantly producing viruses when one is ill. You are constantly swallowing saliva so you might get a fifteen or twenty minute respite from one's "untreated" throat.

What makes this rather idiotic were all of the foolish statements that Trump made and him getting called to task for those statements. When you don't learn from prior errors then you do look like a fool.

IMHO. Taking partial quotes and making them say something they obviously do not say can make someone loose foolish.

It is like the people who quote Trump “There’s good people on both sides” and never quote the next sentence where says plainly “I’m not talking about White Supremist”

Yet to this day quote the first but not the second.

It does not look as if those making fun of Johnson are very far off the mark in their quotes. They may be out of context, but they appear to have gotten the gist of it correct.

Ever wonder why Johnson was accepted and praised when he worked for Obama and as soon as he worked for Trump the gist of his words suddenly took on another meaning?

He went from accepted and praised to hated based on who he served.

Interesting

Or perhaps he simply did not make such stupid errors at that time. He may have caught Trumpism, the tendency to say stupid things because one's political agenda disagrees with reality.

I am sure that Patty Murray is very grateful.
