DSL installation HELP

We bought the service for a year through SBC Yahoo, the installation kit, the routers, and the USB network adapters-but my sister wants me to ask someone who knows how you install it all. She's wanting to do it herself to save the $130 cost of a technician call, so can someone provide some easy, step by step instructions for someone who has never set up a DSL home network for two PCs? Thank you

Boy, that'll be fun.

Basically, the idea is this: You plug the DSL gizmo into the phone line, and then the other end (the one that looks like a phone cable only bigger) into a hub or switch, then the computers into that. Unless there's wireless.

Depends on how you want it set up.

1) thing with Yahoo DSL, is you need to install there software to connect the First time, there software helps in creating the Username / Password that the modem will use to connect.

2) Are you wanting to hook up multiple computers, If so you will need a Firewall/router, if Not, you should still get a Firewall/router.

So lets start at the begenning



1) In the kit you will receve the DSL Modem, cables, (Possably a Network Card), and DSL Filters.
2) Conect the DSL Filters to each phone in the House.
3) Conect the Phone line without a DSL Filter to the DSL Modem
4) If you already have a network card skip Step #5
5) Install the Network card that came with the DSL Kit & Install the software for the network card
6) Connect the DSL Modem with the network cable to the Back of your computer.
7) Install the Yahoo/SBC-DSL Software And Follow the automated instructions
8) Create your Username & Passowrd (REMBER THEM)
9) If you are going to be using a firewall / router, the firewall/router will have an internal webpage that will allow you to enter the Username & Password form step 8
10) If using firewall / router, connect DSL Modem to the FIrewall router Out connection.
10a) Connect the rest of your computers to the Firewall
10b) Set your computers to get a IP Number from the firewall (in your network settings)
11) If your not using a firewall/ router and your using Windows, format your harddrive & kiss your computer goodbuy because you will be hacked in about 24 Hours
11a) But really, first thing is after you connect to the internet, download ALL updates & security patches from Microsoft.

This is just a quick overview, but the instructions that come with the kit should be enough to help you get started.

That last point was a bit of a joke, but I do know (First hand) that when you are not running a firewall, it is like leaving your front door unlocked at night. No it will not guarantee that someone will break in, and someone may never break in, but when that one dose come around, why make it easy for them ?

Oh, is there any other special advice for wireless connections? Because my sister's here will be on a normal line, but mine has to be a wireless connection because I don't have a phone line in my room.

One other question: would what I do or say on my computer get relayed to hers in any way? She's more conservative than I am, and although I'm not into porn or drugs or anything seriously *bad,* if she saw something like a mild shounen ai pic I was intending to send to a friend, she would get quite angry for the theme, and I really don't want to be yelled at LOL.

IF your using 802.11b set the encryption, password, and MAC address to help secure the network.

If she isn't comfortable setting up the DSL, then she won't be able to see what you are doing on your computer.

With that being said......

The outline above is pretty much the steps you need to take.

You need to get a wireless router. DSL modem plugs into the router and the router into her computer. She will be hardwired this way.

For your wireless connection, you will need a wireless network card for your computer. Follow directions and it is easy to set up.

The router will give you a hardware firewall which will be much better than the Norton software firewall.

LOL, Datan's right here. . .we went almost a year without a firewall (thought we didn't need it since we had dialup), then when we got it, we started getting notices of blocked hack attempts almost every 30 minutes, and still do on occasion.

Get a firewall. Especially if you have sensitive information on your computer (i.e. financial information of any sort, medical records, personal e-mails or other private or legally privileged communications, uncopyrighted writings, state secrets, etc, etc). Simple software firewalls are easy to install (I could even do that LOL) and even easier to maintain-and will most likely stop your average script kiddie hacker.

Actually I would know it, I have a sensor on my computer telling me if someone is trying to get inside my computer. The perks of working with the police.

I had one at one time, but they are so much of a hassle, always having to give permission to use a certain program, and then half the time it wouldn't work anyways. I will just stick to my sensor. It works just fine.

There are many signs that you are being hacked, if you only know what to look for. It doesn't take much of a genius to figure it out, actually (and thankfully). The best way is to see if your computer is running slow, shutting down or complete loss of control of the system, or the modem lights going haywire without you utilizing the internet. That doesn't mean the occasional flicker either, as your provider will be pinging you on a regular basis.

Firewalls only give you a false sense of security. There isn't a single software firewall in existence that can't be hacked by a professional. As a matter of fact, one of the most popular, Black Ice, is also the most susceptible due to a known flaw that Pearson Software refuses to fix.

Your best bet, if you're going to protect your computer from "hackers" is a hardware firewall, such as a router that incorporates SAP/NAT security. See Microsoft or Linksys for more details.

Almost ALL of the attacks that you see in the logs of software firewalls are bogus. 99% of them are pings, making sure you still exist. The remaining 1% are divided up amongst punks using trojan scanners across a huge IP range, looking to see if you were stupid enough to run rogue software that installed a trojan they can exploit.

Most people fail to realize one simple point. What do you have that a real hacker could POSSIBLY want? What makes it worth his time to get into your system? Nothing. There is nothing that you have that's worth having that he can't get somewhere else, unless you are the US military, Microsoft or a bank or something. If you have a firewall, it says that you have something to hide, and now the wannabe attacker has an objective. To find out what it is.

Windows XP is quite secure. To the average individual, they aren't going to be able to penetrate it's defenses. XP has it's own built in Internet Firewall that you can enable if you're paranoid.

All you have to do is stay away from rogue sites and software and you'll be just fine. The latest wave of trojans are installed by user stupidity, installing "toolbars", "dialers", downloading porn and warez and other stupid garbage. They are used to report to a central location where the "hacker" can then assemble them to commit massive DoS attacks on a given server. Some trojans attack a server automatically on a given date range. Still others report all your movements to a data collection facility. None of this is performed by a true hacker hacking into your system. It's done by your actions only.

You guys have nothing to worry about, and you're giving yourself a headache you don't need by installing the typical freebie firewall. Nobody wants your system or your personal files. Don't think so highly of yourself

No, I mentioned how they do DoS attacks. You install the software yourself. The trojan reports back to a central location, often on IRC. The script kiddy then sends them all on a DoS attack on a set server. Some trojans even attack certain servers between specific dates. A software firewall won't save you from getting a trojan. Your diligence will, though

And Yes you can get software installed remotly if the system your compermising has no protection

That is what my point was, Software firewalls are only good for Outgoing data.
Me, I like to deny things like windows search / media player / and such from phoning home.
