I was sitting in the back seat of a parked car, possibly our family car, when it started to move slowly all by itself. I figured that I had to park it again somehow, so I climbed into the driver's seat. I didn't know how to drive (and can't in real life) and I was worried about what to do. I managed to drive out of the car port that I was in and onto the road. I had to check the foot pedals' 'labels' to see what to do. The trip was unsteady and wobbly and I took an illegal turn at one point, but managed to make it back and re-park the car safely. At the end of the dream, I'm telling my mother about the experience and laughing.

Any ideas for how to interpret this?

consider taking more control over your life and being more confident. as it is you're taking a more active role. It might be a little 'wobbly' but you make it safely. The experience is a positive one. See where your energies are spent and what you need to do but have not had the courage or confidence to do.

I need to be in the driver seat myself and take control over my life too. We need to be absolutely one with God; Lord have mercy on us. With the Lord we can overcome all things.

Felix has gotten the essential point here; but I want to give a slightly different perspective.
A car often represents the self. Your "motive power," including your unconcious mind. That you are "unfamiliar" with it simply means you are like most people. Yet, when the need arises, you actually exercise very good control, helped a little bit by the clues it gives you (the labelled pedals.) And note that, when you take the wheel in an effort to prevent an accident that would hurt both of you, the car willingly comes under your control.
This dream suggests to me that you are already a well-integrated person. It goes without saying you should not just take the family car out here in the waking world; but the dream itself gives you reason for increased self confidence.

Backseat driver? Taking over authority of the family?

It is not an important dream, regardless.
