• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I admit, I have had my issues with alcohol and I am proud to say God has helped me overcome it. But I know people in my town that drink Listerine (especially on Sundays because you can't buy liquior on Sunday). They say it gets you just as drunk since its about 21% alcohol.

Has anyone else heard of this? I guess your kidneys would never get gingivitis :D

when I was in rehab, we had to take antibuse and use only alcohol free mouthwash or get rather sick. I odnt use mouthwash/rinse that has alcohol to avoid any possiblity of it getting in my system.

But I know folks that have drank listerine (or other brands that contain alcohol) for the alcohol content and have known of one that drank aftershave.

yea, I go to rehab in January and I'm not allowed anything with alcohol in it, including mouthwash, cologne, astringent, etc...
you will be or should be given a list of what all products that contain acohol in it. I was surprised of the various items that have alcohol in it - shampoo for instance!

I have seen people drinking all kinds of stuff. Stern-o, Vanilla extract, and so on and so forth. If a guy wants to get drunk he'll find a way.

yea, I drank some lemon extract that was 73% alcohol one time. I had a DWI and couldnt get to the store, otherwise, I don't see the point. This Listerine sure is doing the trick though...weird though, I can barely see at all

Turning to other things with alcohol in them to get a buzz is definitely a sign that there's a problem. Many treatment centers will put you on medication that will make you physically sick if you consume any alcohol.

I want to thank all of you who prayed for me and others like me with problems with alcohol. I went through the 2 month Christian program and it was awesome.

I'm doing very well now. I'm getting involved in a good church and I just got a good job.

God will fix things if you let Him. We have to realize that He is a better manager of our lives than we are.

When you realize this and surrender to Him, He will heal you and change the world around you.

That's great news Will! My previous attempts at sobriety were meaningless and short lived until I learned this fact.

You need to talk... let me know.

I went through rehab and they took my after shave away now I thought that was a bit much mainly because I couldn't imagine drinking it but some people have. They also did not allow vanilla extract in the kitchen for the same reason(Alcohol content). When I thought I heard it all my roomy,in rehab, told me he was stealing his mothers "Fentanyl Transdermal patches" and scooping out the gel inside to get high.So nothing suprises me now.Imagine if some of this ingenuity and cleverness We addicts use was put to some good and constructive use? Brother!

the fentanyl part isnt too suprising. its a very powerful pain killer.
locally, awhile back, there were news headlines of people dying from buying this batch of heroine that was laced with fentanyl.

the most shocking part about that was once it made headlines, some of the more hardcore junkies actually started looking for the stuff because it provided a stronger high.

you'd be suprised what you can get messed up off of.

I've seen people drink vanilla essence (and I have tried it.) You'd be surprised what people do for their alcohol addictions.

 Lemon extract anyone, we had a family member that drank all the different flavors. Kind of like a Tasters Choice thing, me? hem.. let me think, thinking doesn't come that easy anymore because I drank $250.00 a month of Tequila for oh, about 10-15 years. The family member? dead and I'm afraid they didn't have Christ. Died on the operating table their aorta burst.:o

That phrase Jesus saves, the sweetest words I ever heard!

In Christ,
Lee
