I know a few Christians at work and they seem to drink a lot and a few of them smoke weed, is this allowed? I know you’re not supposed to be drunk but are you allowed to be drunk like once a week or something? I don’t really drink so it doesn’t bother me I’m just kinda curious and confused about it.

Any advice, thanks.

Hi,
Scripture clearly says we are not to be drunk ever. Ephesians 5: 18 says so.

"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."

I believe, though I have no specific scripture saying otherwise, that smoking weed is just as wrong. Scripture repeatedly discusses being controlled by the Holy Spirit, and if one is high or drunk, then they are not controlled by the Spirit, but instead they are controlled by the drug or alcohol.

I am a recovering alcoholic. I used to drink, or get drunk as a binge drinker.

I suggest you pray for your friends, and encourage them, as the Holy Spirit leads you, to consider seeking help for their behaviors, as even Christians can be addicted to drugs or alcohol. I go to Alcoholics Anonymous. Some Christians go to Celebrate Recovery, a 12 step Christian support group.

Well firstly if a christian is doing that, then

1. They are TRUELY saved BUT they may still be working on getting rid of that habitual sin (which by the way is a long, bumpy road)

or

2. They may NOT be saved. Because being saved means being a new creation, which is why Jesus said 'unless you are born again, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven'.

Again, I wouldn't assume anything, it's just for the record.

But yes, getting drunk is a sin, EXCEPT as the proverbs says, someone is about to pass away or if someone is in horrifying distress.

Smoking weed, I have no wisdom in that unfortunately so I can't say. Sorry! :)

Getting drunk is not ok. Having a few "socials" is ok. Obviously an alcoholic needs to avoid any alcohol lest they fall...

Weed... it's illegal sooooo - I dunno it's debatable. Abortion is legal and I would have to think God would rather me smoke a joint than be part of an abortion but I dunno - I tend to think it's a sin... but then again it is legal in other places sooooo, - I dunno, that's a tricky one.... I sure helped on this one eh? :sorry:

There is something lacking in the vitality of their faith if they see it OK to get drunk and smoke weed.

Apart from any Christian considerations we now now that pot is not harmless and that excessive alcohol use is damaging to our brains and liver. That in itself is reason why Christians should not behave like that.

The issue on smoking weed is not okay if anything, because it is illegal and we're supposed to respect authority.

Drinking in itself is not a sin unless it is against your personal morals. And as everyone else stated already, it is a sin if you drink to the point of being intoxicated.

Also, don't look down upon them just because they drink.

Okay guys, I'm not looking down on them, I'm more worried about them, I just don't like the fact that they are very vocal about being Christian but they do things like that.

I will pray for them and tell them that's it bad for them. (But not in a bad way.)

Thanks Madison for sharing that couldn't have been easy? Your post was also very helpfull I thank you.

Thanks for the replies everyone and God Bless.

While there's an in-house debate on drinking alcohol, there is none on getting drunk. Scripture is clear that drunkenness is not okay.

Also, we are to stay within the law of the land and live peaceably with our government and our neighbors. Right now, marijuana is illegal, and thus out of bounds for Christians.

I think everyone is at different stages in there walk w/God. Last week my pastor said you have to let Christ in first and then He will help you get rid of the bad things in your life not the other way around because you certainly can not do it on your own. Rememer to not judge someone else. Get rid of the plank in your eye befoe you worrry about the spliner in someone elses eye. perhaps you should distance yourself from these "christians". That is what i would do. You sound like a good person. God bless. Pray for them.

Would marijuana be okay, then, if you were in a country where it was legal? This whole area is a gray area. Everything that we put into our bodies has an affect on us. We know from scripture that we are to treat our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. Which means we are to take care of our bodies and not abuse them. Getting drunk would qualify as an abuse. And not only does it affect your body, but it affects your judgment. Pray for your friends and tell them what you believe to be true. If drunkenness is a sin, it doesn't just suddenly become allowable on alternate Tuesdays. It's no less of a sin just because you don't do it often.

On a side note, to spark some thoughts... in the context of our bodies being temples of the Holy Spirit, what do you think about smoking? Or choosing the big mac over a healthier meal?
