  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Only by the Grace of God am I not a Drill Sergeant. But since no one replied to this thread, I thought I might give the bare bones of it as I know it in the Army.

Most Active Duty DS's are E6 to E7s, I think they have to have atleast 8 years in military service, no record of any kind of assualt, domestic dispute, etc.

Most DS I've seen don't choose to become DS, the Army chooses you and sends you to Drill School, which is a 9 week school that makes you relive basic training all over again, but this time they learn how to teach basic solidering skills instead learning them.

Females can become DS and E-5s can as well, if they are reserve. There are even Drill Corpreals, but they are rare.

To my knowledge, to be chosen as a DS you need to be in the top 10% of of performance reviews/promotion board attendees in your MOS. Or you can volunteer to be a DS. You must be able to score a 270+ on a APFT also, I believe. And you have to take an oath that you would never request your trainees to do something that you are not willing or able to do yourself. (Like if you can't cross a one-rope bridge, you can't ask them to do it.... so it would theoretically disqualify you. You basically have to be an Expert at every area of basic training.)

haha i EVER had to join the military, id aim for drill sergeant...

so can a woman only be a DS if she is a reservist, or can regular active duty become DS?
Active duty women can absolutely be drill sergeants. And drill sergeants (in the Army anyway) aren't just assigned to basic training units. They are also assigned to Advanced Individual Training units.

It's a tough gig, in basic training anyway. Little sleep, even less time at home with your family.
