  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why are dresses more modest than pants? I know that some Pentacostals who hold to the Holiness doctrine only were dresses but I thought that stemmed from the idea that women shouldn't wear men's clothing and visa versa not for modesty. I don't see how pants would be less modest, I mean, in pants you never have to worry about being caught up in the wind and having an awkard moment (something that was always an issue with my Catholic school uniform skirt - fortunately we were allowed to wear shorts under it!)

I prefer that my wife adhere it to the "It was on sale" doctrine. ;)
Of course she is a protestor on that matter... and instead adheres to the "I'll buy whatever I want" doctrine instead.
As most of you know, this diabolical doctrine was sent into motion earlier this century.

I've heard the main issue with pants on women (other than they're men's clothes, and we shouldn't encourage a further blurring of the differences between the sexes) is that they draw attention to certain areas, whereas a dress is much more loose and covering.

I know a Catholic family in which the girls wear only mid-calf dresses or skirts. But the boys wear shorts (in the summer)...I never thought that was fair.
someone could argue that girls are attractive to boys when they wear shorts, whereas the opposite is not as true, at least to the same degree.
So long as my kids (all 3 girls) dress modest and respectibly, I wont be limiting them to any particular style of clothing.

To the OP:

A Catholic friend of mine was a "dresses-onlyer", or more properly, wore only skirts. I began doing the same. What I found though, was that it quickly became a pride thing. It was a "I'm going to go so far right so that I cannot even appear to be left" thing. It was then that I had my reality check.

My work slacks come from the men's department... mostly because the way they do sizes is MUCH more straightforward, and I'm kind of hard to fit in the women's section. :) (There's the matter of having no hips to speak of, lol...) All my regular clothes, though, I stick with my own gender. :D

I like geocajun's 'It was on sale' doctrine... I have my own doctrines that consist of 'Avoid Wal-Mart' and 'Shop at Ross'. :D

As for dresses... I'm not Catholic, so what I say here obviously doesn't have quite the same perspective, but I don't wear them much if at all. I don't own very many of them, it's too cold around here to wear them, and it's hard to ride a bike while wearing one. ;) (My primary form of transportation...)

I have actually been eyeing the men's sweaters simply because I am so sick of women's styles lately. They're either way too tight, low cut, or belly-showing. I keep hearing that the clothes designers are going to get more modest but I haven't seen that happen yet.
