  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Christians should not conform to the world in manner of dress, but they should look decent, modest and clean. How can you be a good influence on the world if you are showing your underwear and hanging your private parts out for everyone to see?

St Paul said women should not look like tramps (1 Timothy 2), men should be a good example (1 Timothy 3).

Sounds like we are to dress appropriately and modestly to me.

Contrary to the opinions of many Christians, the Bible has a lot to say about this issue. 1 Corinthinans 11 is one chapter that no one wants to accept. 1 Peter 3 is another interesting one. What it all comes down to is what LL said earlier though: modesty and an attitude of conformation to Christ and away from the world, and always in a context of grace and forgiveness. With Christ in our hearts, we know that the days are evil and we are to make the most of every opportunity. How will the lost ever take Christ seriously if Christians don't?

Peace

I believe that modesty and propriety are the only unquestionable Biblical standards.

Otherwise much is cultural: I do not believe that women are required to wear dresses all of the time (and sometimes dresses can be even more immodest than a blouse and long skirt or even baggy blue jeans, for example, if you are bending over a lot for some reason, you have a shape that is too large for most dresses sold, or it's a windy day, for example), nor do I believe that men should have army-style buzzcuts or skinned heads so they don't break a "long hair rule."

As for ear piercings I would not do that as my family sees it to be sinful and I do not like pain anyway. Nevertheless I would advise you to read Genesis 24 (I think that's the chapter, not sure) about Rebekah before you make a snap judgment on that. I am reasonably sure all that jewelry, especially the earrings and (gasp  ) nose ring was NOT clip-on or magnetic.
