I'm reminded of something I saw hung in my friend's bathroom, after I had become atheist. I now feel more open about it from when I did then; when I first read it I felt pity, but now I feel sort of happy for them. I'll try to remember it as best I can, it was a poem so I'll just say the basic jist of it:
A man is walking down a beach alongside Jesus. The beach is representative of the man's life. He thanks Jesus for walking with him all that way and helping him. The man turns around and looks down the beach at the two rows of footprints. He notices that at one point of the beach there is only one set of footprints.
The man turns to Jesus and says, "Lord, why are there only one set of footprints there? Did you forget about me and stop walking with me then?"
"No," Jesus replied, "that was when I carried you when you were down."
At first I felt pity. Now, it just makes me smile, and be glad that people have something like that. People need that type of comfort.
