well, here is a thread to discuss your dreams, and maybe discuss the topic in general.

my first question is, why are dreams so strange?
some of my dreams are so ludicrous and illogical they defy any rationalization whatsoever.

also, why do dreams fade from memory so quickly?
i can remember numerous times waking up saying "man, that was one strange dream" and rember most of it, but within the hour forgetting most of it.
other times i can remember most of the dream for a long time.

I believe that dreams are the result of your mind working out your anxieties, and since most anxieties are irrational, your dreams are irrational.

I believe that the dream mechanism is designed in such a way that your dreams are largely forgotten so that you do not confuse them with reality.

Sleep is intended to be complete rest; mind and body. I think dreams are part of resting the mind and brain. That some or most dreams don't seem to make sense may indicate issues that cannot be dealt with consciously, and dreams provide some relief. When I am really tired physically I don't sleep well until I recover a bit, then I can sleep more soundly. I also don't sleep well until my seasonal work (moving students in and out) is over. I have to get away from my home city to really relax (350 miles, to the 'nort woods', to be exact). Even then it take a day or two to really unwind, then I sleep like a 'dead man'; no movement, no dreams. It's great (only two more apartments to rent).

Sleep, include dream, is a major way God shapes each one of us and made one to become a unique person. Identical twins become different in time through dream, even they experienced exactly the same external environment and stimulations. If God wants to tell you something special through dream, then you will remember that.

the most recent dream i had went something like this:
i was driving down the interstate, going somewhere (i don't know where)
all of a sudden i found myself going the wrong way (opposing traffic), the traffic just switched from one direction to the other.
i started looking for an off ramp, and found one that said "exit", all the signs faced my way so i could read them, which would be impossible going the wrong way.
i took the off ramp, only to discover it was a dead end.
i turned around and got back on the interstate going the right way.
next i stop at some kind of "dairy queen, arcade" place (they sold ice cream and had games to play.
i order an ice cream but it was too small.
the owner said they only had 2 sizes small and large, so i ordered the large one.
the large one was big enough to feed a family of 4.
so here i am licking on this thing and it starts to melt . . . everywhere.
it melted so much it caused the sump pump (yes, there was a sump pump, right there in the middle of the place) to come on.
i also remember having this huge "thing" with me i had to lug around, i had no idea what it was.
i told everyone to stay together so i wouldn't have to run them down later when we left.
some of the kids wanted to play the games, so i saked for some change for the machines,
he said you need to go next door for the change.
the place was really cramped, very narrow, and i didn't see any games, but i gave the kids some money and they ran off next door.
so here i am, trying to squeeze my way through this throng of people, trying to keep up with my kid.
right at the back door i got trapped by a group of men and they just started pawing all over me, that's when i woke up.

this is another strange thing about dreams, they seem to be highly detailed and take up a far amount of time.
but in actually i hear that most dreams are fairly short in duration.
yes, i've had some really strange ones.

another thing about dreams, what is it that causes "nightmares" in children?

I once had a dream where I was standing on the side of the road in a semi-desert. Think Route 66 or alike. To road stretches as far as the eye can see on both sides. I want to get to the other side.

I look left: nothing.
I look right: nothing.

I take one step and all of a sudden a ginormous truck passes, making terrible noise and shaking the ground.

Completely shaken up, I run back to the side of the road.

I take a new attempt.
Looking left: nothing.
Looking right: nothing.

I take one step and...... guess.
This went on for a while.

I was completely dazed and confused for a few hours after waking up.

Come to think of it, I've had several dreams like that when I was younger.

In another instance, I was on pretty much the same kind of road. This time, it was me who was driving.
I'm in the car at the side of the road. The road looks perfectly flat.

The second I start driving however, it's not flat at all and a total torture to drive it, getting shaken up at all sides and damaging the car. I stop and look up at the road: again perfectly flat. I start driving and again the road is full of holes, speed bumps etc.

In another instance I was trying to roll a joint.
Everything is fine until the point that I try to "close" it, at which point the paper breaks and I need to start over again.



I guess that at the time I was having those dreams, there was something that I wanted to accomplish which consistently was just out of reach. Succes was right around the corner but for some reason, I wasn't able to reach it.
I don't remember what it was. I'm not even sure if I ever knew what it was - I tend not to pay too much attention to dreams.

It could have been anything really...
Perhaps a girl I like that seemed out of reach.
Or a drumriff that I couldn't manage to nail down.
Or something in school that I "sort of" understood, but never fully.
Dunno.

In any case, I'm glad I don't have such dreams anymore. They were terribly annoying!

I have a recurring dream about a girl I was seriously involved with when I was young. We fought all the time and had a pretty ugly breakup. I really loved her, but she was...........goofy. Whenever I dream about her, every three or four years, I am quite disturbed for most of the following day. Other dreams make little sense and don't bother me, but this one does.

Freud actually said that the dream was the "royal road to the unconscious (UCS)." While his understanding and teaching and psychoanalysis was in error, he did point out that there are things going on in the brain that we are not aware of, or, as I would describe it, "outside of our immediate awareness." The explanation is that the electro-chemical processes buildng up at, and firing through the synaptic cleft, are endless. Even though the brain is programmed to sleep, the ECP continue. The difference is that on the one hand we have immediate conscious awareness at synapse, leading to logical pathways, while on the other the connections made at synapse are fuzzy, jumbled, unable to make a logical connection, hence dreams that are difficult to remember and therefore interpret.

I agree that some dreams can be interpreted, but accuracy is a real challenge.

Freud wanted to explore the UCS. He opened up a Pandora's Box of those who jumped on the bandwagon, each with a somewhat differing insight and approach.

Dreams I have are usually stimulated by my mind. I dream within the confines of my thinking.

The only exceptions to this are drug induced dreams, opium will stretch the mind, LSD will bend it. I recently beat cancer, during that time I was under great stress and pain, the specialist prescribed an opiate based painkiller and sedative. Again my dreams became stretched to a reality at the outer limits of my brain.

In my experience. The brain can't dream something the mind hasn't stored.

i've heard the following about dreams:
you cannot dream about people you have never met.
apparently this means you cannot assign an unknown face to a person in your dreams.

speaking of nightmares:
i had a dream sometime back, i can't remember how long ago.
i remember almost nothing of this dream except it was some kind of road on a gravelly mountainside, and some kind of disaster happened that involved people.
this dream made me physically ill.
it was absolutely disgusting.

another dream i had involved some kind of alien technology.
i found some electronic boxes connected with wires and had lights on them.
i took it home and managed to connect it to my tv.
i got the local newscast.
all of a sudden the picture got real snowy and a sort of alien transmission started coming through.

Dreams:
From my experience I know there are basically two kinds of dreams-
1. Dreams from our minds, our thoughts and
2. Revelational dreams from God.
Most of my dreams are revelations from God.
A lot of the good and bad things that have happened to me or some people I know, I first ' saw' in a dream. Then I pray to actualize the good ones and cancel the negative ones.
So in my life dreams are very special.
I remember more than 95% of my dreams. And I dream about twice a week averagely.
In conclusion, God still speaks through dreams as He promised to do in the Bible.

How could you possibly know that, since not remembering is....not remembering.
It makes no sense.

the place was really cramped, very narrow,

That is actually what the fat in the ice cream is doing to your coronary system. The veins get cloged so the blood has to squeeze though. That is why they put stents in to open them back up again. I knew a guy who owned a Dairy Queen and he was in rehab for problems he was having with his heart from the food he was selling. It can be very gradual and take up to 50 years.

I have dreams that I remember almost every night, some dreams are vivid, and some fade right after I wake up. I've also had dreams that came true too. Like I had a dream one time that I was with some friends having fun like out to dinner or something and as we were saying goodbye in the dream 1 friend told me "You're going to get a new coat", then I woke up. When I woke up I was trying to figure out why I dreamed that and a couple of days later someone bought me a coat for my birthday. So that was interesting. I have a lot of silly meaningless dreams too.
