• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone has ever gotten depressed about being disabled? I have a physical disability and I also have depression that I'm thinking roots back to me being disabled. If so, how do you cope/get better (other than counseling/medicine)?

Whether one has had a disability for a long or short period of time either way there will be periods of adjustments.

For those who have become disabled over time or rather suddenly: it's somewhat like a death to how you used to live. Needing to adjust to a new way of living depending how much the disability is affecting your functioning. Life adjustments aren't easy. And while there are those who are supportive, there are also those who may not be understanding of or knowledgeable about them. At least, this has been my personal experience. Others may not feel the same And those who were born with or have been disabled ever since they could recall may have a different take on it.

Depression has been known to possibly accompany various chronic conditions; regardless if there is a disability involved or not. Some people feel they are helped by being in group therapy where there are a number of people have the same condition. Just knowing they aren't alone. Others try to learn from other people's experiences whether it be from books or online. Still others find some sort of hobby they can partake in to try and focus on something else other than the condition itself. When my migraines are under control I like playing with my computer and reading for example.

I think everyone has different ways of dealing with things.

I find that I have a problem with depression from time to time. It seems that being alone so much tends to get to me every now and then. I find that if I plan outings and special things to do once in awhile it helps. The trick for me seems to be to have something to look forward to.

I know what you're talking about. I have a neuromuscular condition and though I have a lot to enjoy in my life, I feel lonely and forgotten from time to time. I hate spring, the most depressing time of a year... seeing all other people of my age dating and having fun. But when I'm busy with my hobbies and work, I'm fine.

It took me years to adjust...but I find if I let God lead me to the 'work' I need to do for Him, then I feel much more fulfilled. The Lord uses people like us to reach others in amazing ways. We see that all through the bible too.

Pray and find out what wonderful plans He has for you. I once heard a story about an 80 year old lady dying of cancer..the Lord had her write to prison immates and she befriended many and witnessed to many and many were guided to the Lord because of her. She lived quiet a bit longer then the drs had expected to for some strange reason...;)

Check out this site...this lady was in an accident years ago that left her unable to walk and with limited use of her hands...since then the Lord has used her in amazing ways.

I've read Joni's story many times. She is truly inspirational. I know that it has been said many times before but I believe it bears repeating, when God closes a door somewhere he will open a window and I have found it to be very true. We need just find that window. Ever since I had to leave the work due to md God has found so many ways to keep me busy trying to inspire people. I too get depressed and I am very good at feeling sorry for myself but then I'll get a thank you in my e-mail for saying a prayer for some one or for writing to some one when they were down and it perks me up.

sometimes i find i am also starting to go thru depression because i cant get out and go places like i used to. i have anger and saddness and its alot like grieving. i see my life has ending.
i really dont know how to cope and no one else can understand except you all and others who have gone thru this. i look fine on the outside but inside i am sickly. with about 4-5 auto immune desieses.
i am in pain constantly and weak. i pray God will still use me somehow for His glory. i know my attitude stinks but i try not to show it around others. i just let out my feeling here..:)

I, too, have had bouts of auto immune diseases (multiples), and had the amalgams in my mouth removed. They vanished! I don't care what the ADA says, there is something to the idea of mercury poisoning causing this stuff. Maybe not all of it, but in my case it was so. Also, be aware there is a lot of mercury in seafood too. God bless you. Hope you overcome someday.

I had to respond to this post as yes,my disability has affected me with bouts of depression. It's the whole why me bit. Last spring,I made an effort to cleanse out my system by actually going preservative free...as anti depressants make me sleepy, sometimes suicidal, things I won't go into here. You can feel everything lift and come together when ya get off the preservatives, red meat, high fat protein foods..I have a disorder that is still being researched but for me the choice to battle the depression that they say comes with it--is not found in an RX bottle or a counseling room.Comes from within~ cleanse the body and of course there's always prayer,I'll pray for you.:groupray:

Maybe its because I've had health problems for as long as I can remember but it really doesn't bother me anymore.

I am in counseling and on meds but thats for issues other than my health problems. Although I think it is beneficial for everyone with major health problems to see a therapist atleast a few times! Its good to have an unbiased source to bounce things off of.

I used to get mad I didn't have a "normal" childhood and couldn't do everything my friends did and when I did I had to take precautions. And then they became rebellious teens with their own issues and I was glad I wasn't like them!

It still makes me mad to see people who take things for granted like the ability to go to college and just do everyday things

I go though phases, generally in the winter. My asthma being so bad I don't like not being able to go out and do the things I want to do. Depending on the weather I can't go to church if it is 25 or below. I could move to a warmer state but then depending on that weather it might be too hot and then it would be the same in the summer.

Right now I am getting over the flu , which for me is alot more annoying cause I have to be so careful all the time.I just wish sometimes I could be more healthy. :)

Thanks for listening. God bless you!

Hi Servant 4 ever,

Sorry to hear you are feeling down. I think that everyone who has to face a chronic illness or disability gets this at some point. I know I did. The only trouble was when I went to the doctors and told him. Looking back, if he'd said, "you're bound to feel low, you're ill and have just given up your job", and offered to listen if I needed to talk, or referred me to a counsellor, it have helped me to come to terms with it quicker. As it was, I spent years on and off anti depressants. :(
Having said that, I should think the lines can get blurred sometimes, and it's important to find out whether or not you may have clinical depression.

I'm not trained in counselling or anything, but if you want to pm me at any point, please do. I can listen and pray if nothing else.

Gill

Having a disability is tough to deal with but God said he would help us get through it. In 2 Peter he promises us that we will only have to suffer a little while and that everyone goes through things like this, but that he will complete his work in us.
It is easy to be depressed and give up. I have many days like that and I do have to take medication. Some depression is caused by other medications. I know that one of my pain meds causes depression. I have days like today where all I want to do is sleep. It'll get easier.
