My first novel was Crime and Punishment. I've also read The Idiot and The Adolesent. Fyodor Dostoevsky was much into Christian morals and redemption through suffering. I look forward to reading The Brothers Karamazov and The Possesed before I leave this earth. Highly recommeded reading for anyone interested in stiff, cold, yet keen and phsycological literature, besides the fact that he was a good Christian.

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"a good Christian"? anyway... yes, I'd recommend Dostoevsky for some good old moral soul-searching. Have you read any Graham Greene for this kind of thing in a more modern context? Fantastic stuff.. try the Power and the Glory or the Heart of the Matter.

I have only ready Notes from the Underground by Dostoevsky, but it is one of my favorite books. I have every intention of reading the rest of his stuff as soon as time permits.

Funny that... that's the very Dostoevsky I'm currently somewhere near the beginning of...
Some people have accused him of having very weak endings to his novels. What do you lot think?

I read 'Notes', but didn't find it as good as Crime and Punishment (my favorite novel). About the flow of his works, both The Adolesent and The Idiot had vast complications in the story, as though he hadn't planned the novel, but just sat down and started writing. Besides what anyone says, Dostoevsky was the most Christian writer that wasn't overly obvious, instead, he acknowledged evil in society and self. Prefering to write about how incurably superficial and mondane human existence is. Every of his five major novels allude to Christianity when only through great suffering, the characters realize their helplessness without God.
