Dorm essentials?

Can't comment on the condom discussion having found myself tempted and eventually pregnant, so I'll go back to the lighter side.

I loved talking to my parents and my little brother. It made me feel like I was still grounded, so bring a phone card or cell phone!

Bring an umbrella. Seriously. I can't tell you how many days I ended up soaking wet because I didn't have the good sense to bring an umbrella.

Creativity. Definitely bring that. You'll need it when you're trying to find a way to make that bag of Doritos into breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

A good measure of patience. Just like high school, there are going to be people you don't like. Take a deep breath, and remember that you're there for a reason, and it isn't to let yourself get bugged by other people.

And openness. You'll meet a lot of people with differing view points. While it's imperitive that you stand firm in what you believe, be prepared to listen to what other people think too. In this way, you a) might learn something, and b) may find ways to express your own beliefs to those people.

Most of all, enjoy it! You know how "you don't know what you got 'til it's gone?" It's true!

i dunno, i have an umbrella, but it's so fun to walk in the rain. except on cold days, of course.

Oh yeah -- film. granted, you own a camera. and if you're not into film, then a digital camera. it's just handy to have around for whatever occurs.

ok, so about this homesickness thing....is there anything to help with it? im off to Bible colege in september and i just know im going to be the most 'wussy' person there! im going to miss my family!

Biggest wuss? My first morning at school, I knocked on my RA's door crying at 7 in the morning. Beat that. Not only did I miss my Mom (my best friend) but I was also physically sick. At first, I called my Mom at least once a day (phone cards absolutley essential) but, while I still miss her, it has dwindled to a few times a week. But know that you are not the only one! I used to think that I was the only one who missed her family so much, but now I know that my friends do too, many of them talk to their mom's more than I do. It's hard at first, but then you get the hang of balancing your two lives. I cried oceans the day I left home for school, but now I look back on it and laugh. College is truely the best time of your life.

A cheap sorce of posters are old calenders. I have had two calenders that consisted of M.C. Escher prints, and I just cut them up and got 24 posters.

I have two posters on my wall right now that were car ads in newsweek, but the front of them had absolutely nothing to do with cars, and they were awesome. I tore those out 2 years ago and they're still hanging in my room.

Thanks everyone for this list. It is really helpful. I'm a senior and I'll be going away to college this year. I'm definately going to use this on my mom, because I guarantee she's going to try to load me up with so much **** that even my roommate won't be able to fit in the room.

Posters: I have a bunch of clippings from the newspapers about the University band, which I'm a part of, programs from our football games, civil right new clipping reprints, pictures of my folks, signs that my friends drew using my namem scriptures, inspirational sayings on t-shirts and some costume jewelry

A small dry-erase/white board is something I brought...It tends to be helpful so if someone needs to leave you a message, they can just put it on there (if it is hung on your door). Can't really think of much else at the moment.

Sports magazines too - they all have a few full-page, full-colour prints per issue and just snag the ones you like. Also, my school (and various others) always have poster sales at the start of the semester (bout 2 weeks in) where you get very nice posters for cheap - I snagged two LARGE posters for 18$ each where they are regularily 42$, same with other smaller movie posters - LOTR, Star Wars, etc.. for about 12$, regularily 22$. They're now on my wall at home, but I kept a few out here - fireman and the tropical island that you can see in the image below.

Yeah, my school had the same thing, wroth. A popular poster store, Beyond the Wall, came in at the beginning of the semester to sell posters at big discounts. I have 3 Van Gogh prints, a Monet print, and a black and white poster that I got from them for really cheap. They're still my favorite poster place.

Well I might as well add to the list or at least what I brought with me.

-sheets, pillow, extra blankets
-alarm clock
-computer, (printer)
-microwave
-fridge
-books (I read often between classes when I don't have time to come back to my room)
-food (snack stuff to but not all junk food)
-spring and winter clothes (you can take them in shifts, not everything all at the same time)
-quarters
-dishes (I have glass ones but paper works great too if you don't have a kitchen on your floor)
-extension cords
-cell phone/phone cards
-camera
-hangers (metal, plastic and the ones to clip on skirts/pants or whatever)
-medicine (headache stuff, upset stomach . . .)
-shampoo, toothbrush . . .
-laundry detergent


Well that is all I can think of at the moment.

I took a lot of the same stuff...except I don't have a microwave or a fridge.

some other stuff that you might want to bring are:

• music
• posters and pictures
• a calendar
• towels
• sleeping bag (in case your dorm does a retreat)
• headphones
• movies (hey, you gotta unwind somehow!)

also, make sure you know how to connect to your campus network. for my school, we had to buy an Ethernet cable in order to connect to the campus network
