Work does not equate to a worldly job, it can be keeping the house; cooking; cleaning; cutting wood. Everyone should put their hand to what they are able to do. Anyone who cannot work because they are thoroughly invalid such as unfortunate severely autistic/retarded people, then we are to aid those who cannot help themself. We don't tell the newborn baby, well, if you don't go to work, I'm not feeding you. There is obviously a reasonable limit to this statement.
This is a commandment against laziness. I have known family members who literally just watched television or played video games all day while their wives worked. These people are mentally and physically sound, but they don't want to work. They are just completely lazy. Those people, who are perfectly capable to work, should be working in some manner. No one is demanding six digit income; but they should be putting their hand to work that needs to be done: do the laundry, make dinner, fix the light-switch etc. If all their capable of doing is licking envelopes then set them to lick envelopes. We come to serve not be served and we should serve in whatever manner we are able, even if it's pathetically small and seemingly insignificant, the desire to serve should be there. We should be giving not getting.
Lazy people who only seek to get and never give do not deserve nourishment.
