  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm not a parent, but I had to share this, as this is so true of kids today: ^_^^_^
========================================================

DON'T MESS WITH MOM!

My son came home from school one day, with a smirk upon his face.
He decided he was smart enough, to put me in my place.

"Guess what I learned in Civics Two, that's taught by Mr. Wright?
It's all about the laws today, The 'Children's Bill of Rights.'

It says I need not clean my room, don't have to cut my hair
No one can tell me what to think, or speak, or what to wear.

I have freedom from religion, and regardless what you say,
I don't have to bow my head, and I sure don't have to pray.

I can wear earrings if I want, and pierce my tongue & nose.
I can read & watch just what I like, get tattoos from head to toes.

And if you ever spank me, I'll charge you with a crime.
I'll back up all my charges, with the marks on my behind.

Don't you ever touch me, my body's only for my use,
not for your hugs and kisses, that's just more child abuse.

Don't preach about your morals, like your Mama did to you.
That's nothing more than mind control, And it's illegal too!

Mom, I have these children's rights, so you can't influence me,
or I'll call Children's Services Division, better known as C.S.D."

Of course my first instinct was to toss him out the door.
But the chance to teach him a lesson made me think a little more.

I mulled it over carefully, I couldn't let this go.
A smile crept upon my face, he's messing with a pro.

Next day I took him shopping at the local Goodwill Store.
I told him, "Pick out all you want, there's shirts & pants galore.

I've called and checked with C.S.D. who said they didn't care
if I bought you K-Mart shoes instead of those Nike Airs.

I've canceled that appointment to take your driver's test.
The C.S.D. is unconcerned so I'll decide what's best."

I said "No time to stop and eat, or pick up stuff to munch.
And tomorrow you can start to learn to make your own sack lunch.

Just save the raging appetite, and wait till dinner time.
We're having liver and onions, a favorite dish of mine."

He asked "Can I please rent a movie, to watch on my VCR?"
"Sorry, but I sold your TV, for new tires on my car.

I also rented out your room, you'll take the couch instead.
The C.S.D. requires just a roof over your head.

Your clothing won't be trendy now, I'll choose what we eat.
That allowance that you used to get, will buy me something neat.

I'm selling off your jet ski, dirt-bike & roller blades.
Check out the 'Parents Bill of Rights', It's in effect today!

Hey hot shot, are you crying, Why are you on your knees?
Are you asking God to help you out, instead of C.S.D..?"

I LOVE THAT!!!!!! too cute. Though, to warn some people, a neighbor's sister had Children's services threaten to take away a child of theirs because they had their two daughters, 5 and 11, sharing a room. They said that the 11 yr. old needed her privacy, so mom and dad are sleeping on the couch and daughter, 11 yr. old, has master bed and bath.

I'm not surprised and it saddens me to no ends... c.p.s. er whatever you call it is a good idea gone so horribly wrong... I shared a bedroom with 2 other brothers once and always shared with at least 1, how stupid can folks be.

On the other hand I love that to, childrens bill of rights HA! No doubt there's sumthin out there that says everythin that feller was sayin though.

...but what does this say about those of us who do take our kids shopping at the Salvation Army, would never dream of a child having their own TV or Nike Air shoes, make their kids pack their own lunches...?

Hey, I do go thrift store shopping, and to the good will when we were in the states, and my kids have yet to get a pair of shoes that costs over $20 (and even that was the oldest when he had to have specific shoes for school). But, I like the point it makes, we control what our kids can and can't have. We can be their best friend or their worst enemy, and it is mainly their choice as to which we become.

I agree with the point as well.

But it does seem to depict those who shop at the Salvation Army or Goodwill (in my town we refer to "Sal's Botique") as somehow caring less about their kids. Or, more accuratly, the Mom in the poem proposing doing many of the things some of us have been doing all along becasue her child is ungrateful and not appreciative of the proper role of parents. What we have chosen to do (for a wide variety of reasons) is now presented as someting to do to teach the kid a lesson or as a punishment.

oh brother.......

Take the poem as it was intended, just insert any other word one would like. The Salvation Army etc is genreally where alot of used clothing and what not goes and of course things are cheaper there to, we get things like that all the time and I don't think it says anything bout anything. I certainly don't think folks oughta read more into it then what was written...

You could also look at it this way.

A child, over-indulged, given everything he wants, learns the lesson that his parents are overly gracious.

I have told my son his rights and his priveledges, and my list is different, for instance, priveledges for my kids include...

kool-aid
anything sweet (including fruits as they can get the nutrition from veggies for the most part)
toys
their 1 hour a week of video games
and since I homeschool, projects. As I could very easily give them nothing but worksheets.

We all have our priveledges that we remove for misbehaviors, this is just this one woman's.

Anyway, I am sure the OP wanted to give us something to smile about, and it did make me smile.

It did make you smile AND think, doesn't it?

And I'm shocked at the CSD's interference about little girls sharing a bedroom! For heaven's sake, they're GIRLS! They didn't take into consideration that the couple could only afford a two bedroom house?! Sheesh! I think that's going too far....

I shopped at Goodwill-- nothing to turn your nose up, if you can find great deals. I got myself a beautiful microfiber taupe raincoat for $20 (it's missing a liner) and a great leather (REAL leather) jacket for $10. And I found a pair of pink shoes to replace the ones that are getting really ratty.

However, the issue isn't about shopping at Goodwills, Salvation Army, etc....
the issue in this OP in a humorous way, that the kids have far too much rights, because we bend over backwards FOR them.

I'm glad y'all liked it. :)

i have raised my daughter to the best of my ability I know I messed up lots but my girl loves me. When she was younger I had to shop in thrift stores and discount stores cause I could not afford to shop any where else. but now she shops for her own clothes. Love is a rollercoaster but motherhood is a whole amusement park. C Guisewite[ chicken soup for the single parents soul]

Enjoyed the poem it was good for a laugh.

As for the Goodwill shopping thing ... there is nothing wrong with it and my wife seems to find great clothes at the those kinds of stores for a lot less money than a department or clothing store. Same thing for less money ... doesn't seem like a hard decision to me. Why pay $75 for a outfit when you can get it for $25? If anything it teaches our children about being sensible with our money.
