I have just recently started to go back to churh at a very nice place, wonderful ppl and my daughter loves it. I want to start some sort of devotion by myself and with my daughter and me together but I dont know where to start on either. :help:

I want to do a bible study but I just cant seem to find one that catches me....also would like to start some sort of bible reading. I guess I am just confused on where to go and which way to turn ....how does one estabilish any practice....I have the want and now I just dont know where to go from there.

Idealy I would love to do a bible study with someone....but just moving to my state I am currently in and not haveing friends yet and my place of work I am it...no co-workers it is hard. I have only gone to this church twice so really havent got into anything at the church....just still feeling my way around.

And when any of you study, do you just use your bible or do you have supplemnt things you use to do your studying?

Man I feel like an idiot

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Have a blessed day

Hi reflection. Have you tried the things under Deeper Fellowship? They have discussions there on parts of the Bible and it makes for a good study. A Bible study isn't a Bible study though without the Bible. I have devotional supplements that gives me questions to think about and everything but I have to look up the verses and read there in God's word. They are really good though. You will get a good feel for things when you go to church more and I am sure that there are many people there also that will help you out. You can find devotionals and supplements at any book store. Hope that helps! Lily00:angel:

Thank you Lily for your help...I will check under Deeper Blessings to see what that has to offer....yes I know that all things end with the bibel was just wnderingwhat types of supplements you use on top of the bible...hence the bible is the source of most searches but what do you use to make that search begin?

I use my bible only, usually, but commentaries and such are helpful for others. I don't want anyone distorting my view of scripture. But, I also welcome being taught. Try and find a church, one that obviously teaches sound biblical doctrine. But for you in particular, make sure it's discipleship program is good.

Hi friend -
Please don't feel like an idiot - we all had to start at the same place. ;)

Here's what I prefer in general to a commentary:
The NIV Thompson Chain Reference Study Bible (It lists verses near the back on 1000's of subjects). It is great for devotions.

The NIV Serendipity Bible includes devotions at various levels that have personal application.

I daily click on "Devotion" above, then click on "Our Daily Bread". That will lead you to a daily devotional, basic level, and include about three chapters of the Bible to read (leading you to covering the entire Bible in one year - but if that overwhelms you, the main thing is not how many times we've been through the Bible, but how many times the Bible has been through us).

For devotions with you and your child, you could click on the devotional posts in that section, such as the ones by "The Storyteller", and look up the verses on the subject, such as given in the Thompson's Chain Reference. I have no children, so I really don't know of a particular devotional book to suggest. Perhaps someone else here may know of one. What is the age of your child?

P.S.
[sign]HAPPY BIRTHDAY[/sign]

Happy hunting. :)
Aloha in Jesus

I have
God Word Made Plain by Mrs Paul Friederichsen
Nelson's Complete Book Of Bible Maps and Charts ( just got this one, I'm so excited. Every time I read the Bible I'm wondering where in the Mid-East these places are.)
Stong's Exhustive Concordance of the Bible (which is also on E-Sword)
A Book of Names (I think it's Vine's)
And a Bible dictioary, or 2.
I love E-Sword because it has a few commentaries and different Bible versions to compare, because
Things That Are Different Are Not The Same by Dr. Mickey P Carter
Don't feel like an idiot. The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask.
I have a saying at work "I'd rather look stupid than be stupid, so I'm going to ask" :D

Thank you all for your help...I downloaded E-Sword and that seems pretty cool....tried bluebible and signed up for that.

My daughter is 10 and very interested in learning. i found a good site for bible devotions for her but I am not on my computer so I will have to post the link when I am home. It is very good for children the one that I have seen so far.

Thank you for all the help so far...and will try the devotion tab.

Good sites as well
Also bible and sunday school classes
That will be a good way of learning

When you are first starting out with devotional Bible reading, it's tempting to get into one of those "read the Bible in a year" studies, but those can be really time consuming, so people end up quitting. Who has two hours to spend every night reading the prescribed passages?

But if you start out reading only 15 minutes a day, it isn't time consuming or overwhelming, and you are less likely to quit.

Start anywhere in the Bible. Just pick a book and give it 15 minutes a day.
