Not being a person with a naturally devious and manipulative mind, I sometimes miss the motivation behind the actions.

I learned it today while driving to my prayer group, and it made a lot of sense. It hinges on the words "without prejudice."

We know that Mayor Adams visited Trump in Mar a Lago and discussed his case. And Trump came up with an artful deal--guaranteeing him maximum control over America's largest and greatest city, my hometown.

If the case is dismissed "without prejudice," it can be reactivated at the first disobedience of his marching orders.

Not only "Jump! How high?" But "Deport! How many?" Adams will have to do whatever Trump wants to maintain his freedom. Who knows? Maybe Trump Tower, built with a 40 year property tax abatement (gained from an appeal to the NYS Supreme Court), might even get another 40 year tax abatement. After all, what's the fun of being president if it can't be monetized to maximum advantage.

This deal is bad for NYC, and bad for America, and devastating for democracy.

The only advantage is that Adams' term will end in January 2026, so he only has 11 months of indentured servitude before gaining his freedom.

I think that Donald Trump has built massive towers in the minds of many and I recommend tearing them down and replacing it with the things of God. We can either remain angry and bitter about politics and allow it to corrupt our souls, or leave it in the hands of God.

I see what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable, and it is the antithesis of what Elon Musk and Donald J Trump are doing to America.

Is letting Africans and Asians die of starvation, dehydration and malaria beautiful and noble? Is removing all senior management from vital federal departments, leaving them to cost-cutting figureheads with no knowledge of what the department does beautiful and noble? Is firing thousands of federal employees beautiful and noble? Closing an agency that protected Americans from avaricious and fraudulent banking and loan actions beautiful and noble? Is eliminating the Dept of Education, which, among other things, provides an "equal education in the least restrictive environment" to disabled children beautiful and noble?

Is anything at all being done by Musk and Trump "beautiful and noble?" Not that I can see.

Jesus was justifiably angry at the Temple. We are called to justifiable anger as well.

Trump predicted that Adams would be indicted after Adams made the comment about migrants--breaking with the Democratic Party line. Trump and the Justice Department have been trying their best to put an end to political lawfare. However, it made me think of the article I just read today about the left "waiting in the wings:"

It behooves those of us who want to push the pendulum back to a state of normalcy to be vigilant, keeping a close eye on those who say they are turning over a new leaf. As for those who won’t budge an inch, they need to be outed and defeated. We plan to do our part."

If you cannot see any good in Trump, Elon Musk, or JD Vance, if you cannot even accept the possibility that they doing what they believe to be good, even if you disagree, then maybe you need to have a conversation with your priest about it. Hear my heart, I am not trying to be inflammatory or rude. I know we have had strong differences politically, but you are still a sister in Christ. Therefore, I do worry about you and your soul. I had an aunt who was like you but on the conservative side. She listened to Rush Limbaugh daily and believed everything Alex Jones said. She became insufferable because she always turned every conversation into a political rant as if she was so consumed by it that it controlled her thoughts and every other aspect of her life. I don't want to see that happen to you.

Truly those who diverted money that should have gone to the needy to trans operas and condoms for terrorists need to be held accountable. How many children that died could have been saved if the Biden administration had shown common decency and compassion for their fellow man? What happened is being exposed, and no federal judge can stop it.

What makes you think that I don't have conversations with priests, deacons, and nuns, and that I don't count some of them as close friends. I have an active prayer life, attend several masses a week (usually in music ministry), belong to different church groups. and am an officer of an ecumenical social justice group and the local food pantry foundation.

I belong to a prayer and study group which I attended this morning. We are not a political group, and I would guess our membership is about 60/40 conservative. Our small group discussion topic was a chapter in a book about how to pray when you are helpless. Someone brought up her work with the immigrants, the fear of children to go to school, how contractors who depend on immigrants are getting call-ins because the workers are afraid of getting deported, etc. I sat back before contributing. To a woman, each one supported the immigrants who have been here for years, and believe the solution is giving the ones already here a pathway to citizenship. I was surprised but gratified that we were all of one heart. This is a wonderful group.

Would I go to reconciliation with a random priest? No. It would have to be someone I trusted and whose advice and counsel would be based on the values that shape my life. I imagine you feel the same way.

But even our bishop voted third party because he could not bring himself to vote for Trump. He voted against Biden because of abortion; he voted against Trump because of who he is and what he represents. I respect that.

I feel bad for the children too. But what would a priest say to a person in confession if they revealed that they had broken the law? What would be their penance for stealing? I believe that the only just pathway to citizenship for people that skipped the line is to get in the back of the line and go through the legal process like everyone else. It isn't fair to the legal immigrants who spent thousands of dollars and years of time to earn their citizenship for someone to just walk across the border and have it handed to them. Furthermore, granting amnesty to illegals only encourages more illegal immigration and more human trafficking and more lost children.

I don't care who you or your priest voted for. Who are you praying for right now. Think about that.

I will just add this. I am sure you didn't mean it this way. But how you came across is that you are "priest shopping" to find a priest who will tickle your ears and tell you what you want to hear and reject any priest who tells you otherwise.

I don't priest shop. I know a number of priests and I respect and like some more than others.
Same thing with retreats, workshops. Our Lenten Day is being led by a priest who teaches using concepts I heard in third grade (circa 1960.) I'm not there anymore.
Another church i help has had a speaker from Catholic Answers. My worldview is completely different.
Like you, I want a deeper relationship with God, and in a church of over a billion people I have found my path, and you may choose differently to get to the same destination. That's ok.

Then, when Justice Department officials transferred the case to the public integrity section in Washington, which oversees corruption prosecutions, the two men who led that unit also resigned, according to five people with knowledge of the matter.

Several hours later, three other lawyers in the unit also resigned, according to people familiar with the developments.

The agency’s justification for dropping the case was explicitly political; Mr. Bove had argued that the investigation would prevent Mr. Adams from fully cooperating with Mr. Trump’s immigration crackdown. Mr. Bove made a point of saying that Washington officials had not evaluated the strength of the evidence or the legal theory behind the case.
