  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was just wondering if we could discuss some of our experiences of knowing when we are in the will of God.

At the moment it seems as though adversity keeps hitting me - particularly in the workplace, things keep on going wrong.

Jesus said that his yoke was easy and his burden light, which suggests to me that if we are feeling burdened and things seem to keep going wrong, then we are not in the will of God. However, on the other hand, if we are in the will of God, then Satan will try to thwart God's will. So could the fact that everything goes wrong be a sign that we are in the will of God.

Does anyone else have some wisdom about this?

Thanks,

maharg

Grace and peace from our God and from our Resurrected Savior to all.

God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, has made known ALL THINGS, including all of His will, even as Col. 4: 12 gives that we should be perfect in ALL THE WILL OF GOD.

This presupposes that we should know ALL the will of God - for how can one be able to do perfectly or completely that of which he has no full knowledge of?
Col. 4: 12: Epaphras, who is [one] of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in ALL the will of God.
Again, we are expected to do all things in all circumstances according to the will of God:
  • We can joyfully do some things according to His will (Rom. 15: 32)
  • We can by suffering do some things according to His will (1 Pet. 4:19)
  • We can by giving also do some things according to the will of God (2 Cor. 8:5)
  • We can with patience do some things according to the will of God (Heb. 1:36) inter alia
The important thing, Maharg, is that we identify and know ALL the will the God... so that even in adversity, even when we are feeling burdened, when all things are normal and good, when all things seem to go wrong, and even when Satan is fighting to keep us from doing God's will ... we can continue to do them perfectly and completely.

Note that in all circumstances listed above, a man who does not know the will of God can hardly do them, let alone perfectly and completely do them.

So, doing the will of God is not predicated upon any pre-existing, prevailing or future circumstance a Christian finds himself or herself.

Rather, doing upon the will of God is predicated upon the good heart (mind and conscience) of a beloved (one who is loved by God and loves God and neighbor) working righteousness by the power of God... for God equips us His power to do His will.

No man who does not love God (a commandment of God) can know His will let alone do them.

Now, below are what constitutes the will of God and nearly all works ordained by God for man to do fall within these categories. All of our desires must also be consistent with them in order to be according to the will of God. May His Spirit reveal if there are more in His will:
  1. Sanctification (1 Th. 4:3)
  2. Thanksgiving (1 Th. 5:18)
  3. Submission (1 Pet. 2:13-15)
  4. Deliverance (Gal. 1:4)
  5. Stewardship (John 6:39)

I don't think you can take adversity is a sign of not being in God's will or if you are. I look at what I am doing and ask myself if what I am doing is pleasing God or honoring Him. Also, if you feel like you are using the gifts God has given you in a way that is a good witness.

if your dad tells you to rake the leaves, how do you know if you are doing what he says ?

Well, you know because you are doing it - and you can see the effects of what you are doing.

The thing is that I am not sure what God has asked me to do. Or maybe I'm concentrating on what He might want me to do over a particular circumstance when He really wants me to focus on what He has asked us to do more broadly, like the poster above said - God's will is to do with loving Him and loving our neighbour.

Maybe, as far as God is concerned, it is not that relevant to Him whether I choose one thing over another because both can be within His will. Or maybe I wil know what to do if I am doing what is more in keeping wih His will generally anyway.

I still feel quite confused about this. But God does want us to follow His will, so He must tell us. A Father would not command us to follow Him if we could not see where He was going. So perhaps to follow God's will, we have to focus more on what He has told us to do in a more general sense, to have a heart that is prepared to serve Him and others, and everything else will fall into place.

Praise God that He loves us enough to help us to come to know Him and His will.

It is hard to do God's will
Especially if the world doesn't want
You to do His will and that we
Really shouldn't pay attention to what
The world says as God wasn't and isn't
Of this world through Christ!

Psalm 1

BOOK ONE

1[a]BLESSED (HAPPY, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly [following their advice, their plans and purposes], nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather. 2But his delight and desire are in the law of the Lord, and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and by night.

Matthew 11:25

Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer: "Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You've concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people. Yes, Father, that's the way you like to work."

Matthew 10:38
"If you don't go all the way with me, through thick and thin, you don't deserve me. If your first concern is to look after yourself, you'll never find yourself. But if you forget about yourself and look to me, you'll find both yourself and me.

Matthew 7:13
[ Being and Doing ] "Don't look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don't fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention.

Matthew 6:30
"If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don't you think he'll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I'm trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God's giving. People who don't know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don't worry about missing out. You'll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

Matthew 6:2
"When you do something for someone else, don't call attention to yourself. You've seen them in action, I'm sure—'playactors' I call them— treating prayer meeting and street corner alike as a stage, acting compassionate as long as someone is watching, playing to the crowds. They get applause, true, but that's all they get. When you help someone out, don't think about how it looks. Just do it—quietly and unobtrusively. That is the way your God, who conceived you in love, working behind the scenes, helps you out.

Matthew 5:48
"In a word, what I'm saying is, Grow up. You're kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you."

Matthew 5:14
"Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

Thank you for the further thoughts. I know that at timnes I have spent too much time working - working first thing in the morning and last thing at night rather than studying God's word. I'm trying to put that right at the moment.

God is much more concerned with our following him in all the seeminly small things isn't He - the way we live our lives? Some things He has told me lately are to praise Him and to meditate on His word in the morning and in the evening. I must follow this and do His will in this and as I do, I guess He will give me my next instructions. We have to do things in His time, because He has set things at the right pace. He knows what He is doing.

Thanks again for the scriptures and ideas.

:)

I know that some people say they know they're in the will of God b/c they have a peace about it. For me that's sometimes true and sometimes not. There are times when I know that what God's word tells me to do isn't going to cause me peace at all. Yet even tho the situation around can sometimes explode, if I hold fast to the truth then that's the only thing that gives me peace. But I know the peace of God is better than the peace of that the world offers. I hope this helps.

There is a difference between peace around you, peace in your body, peace in your mind, peace in your emotions, and peace in your spirit. It can be very hard to tell the difference between some of these and some of the otheres can obscure the others. You have to learn, though, to hear your spirit (and, therefore, God's spirit inside of you). The better you get to know God--through the Word, through prayer, etc.--and the more time that you spend in His presence, the easier it will be, but as long as we are on the earth it will be a struggle to hear God.
It is when we can feel the peace in our spirit that we know that God is in something, even when everything else is unsettled. I have had times like that (not enough of them :7) and I have had some times when my head clearly said, "no", but my spirit said , "yes." Or vice versa. It is so hard to describe...but the spirit is often associated with the gut, the stomach, instead of the heart....

Oh I agree. Our flesh usually is telling us "this is going to get very uncomfortable" while our spirit, which reflects God's Spirit, tells us "do what you know to be right", and our minds struggle to come to terms with all of it. Once our minds and will are aligned with the spirit, there's peace. If our minds align with the flesh, not so much.
I think the heart is where the discision comes from while the gut involves the process...

The reflections on following the spirit rather than the flesh are helpful. I have thought that I should feel at peace when I am following the LORD, and have not done things because I was scared to do them, but actually, following God's will does not necessariloy bring peace of emotionbecause we have to go against what is comfortable in order to do what is right. I think I have confused the two things quite a bit really. I guess the peace comes when we have overcome our fears and followed God no matter what and we know without a doubt that we are in His will because our integrity and character are intact.

Thank you for the furrther thoughts.

I've always sence, when I'm not doing his will, I'm always burden with whatever he has called me to do. until I am obedient, then I get a sence of peace. after I've done his will. it won't go away, till it's done.

If one isn't sure what Gods' specific will is, just do the simple things that are in his word, like witnessing, loving your neighbor, reaching out to the poor. giving of your time and self. e.t.c. those things will lead into his ultimate call on our lives.
