Well; the first thing to explain regarding your comment is that it is a mistake to use Ellen White's writings as a source or origin for Bible doctrine. Our Church does not get the Sabbath doctrine from her, but from the Bible.

Number two; I doubt that your statement is correct anyways. In all that she wrote on the Sabbath; she did point out Bible principles, and I dont see how you could produce even one sentence she wrote, that is in opposition to any Bible principle regarding the Sabbath.

There are many things people do on the Sabbath to make the Sabbath a delight or care for needs that are a violation of the fourth commandment but in God's eyes they are blameless.

Matthew 12:1-5 “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the show bread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?

Why were they blameless? Because the work they were doing serving was to make the Sabbath a delight or caring for needs. This is all in accordance with one, the Sabbath being made for man, and two, keeping the Sabbath holy. These were the same two principles Jesus and His Father lived by.

John 5:16-17 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”

So you see, many things we do on the Sabbath do in fact profane the Sabbath but we are blameless because though they do violate the Law, they fall under the two principles of serving to make the Sabbath a delight or caring for needs.

This is a very different view from that of EGW. She specifically banned pleasure seeking, sports, and swimming.

"Pleasure seeking, ball playing, swimming, was not a necessity, but a sinful neglect of the sacred day sanctified by Jehovah." (Letter 252, 1906)

And, of course, the subject of this thread, as stated earlier:

"We would charge all not to wash their dishes on the Sabbath if this can possibly be avoided. God is dishonored by any unnecessary work done on His holy day. It is not inconsistent, but proper, that the dishes should be left unwashed till the close of the Sabbath, if this can be managed." (Letter 104, 1901)

What people tend to do with quotes like this, is to use them out of context, and thereby give them a completely different meaning than what the author thereof had originally intended.

No one is abandoning anything here. There are definitely many types of "amusements not appropriate on any day of the week, and in the quotes you are pointing to, this is actually the type of idea being promoted and brought to light.

To put it in context, one can simply consider other statements which Ellen White made regarding innocent amusements:

Extreme Views Regarding Recreation.--There are persons with a diseased imagination to whom religion is a tyrant, ruling them as with a rod of iron. Such are constantly mourning over their depravity and groaning over supposed evil. Love does not exist in their hearts; a frown is ever upon their countenances. They are chilled by the innocent laugh from the youth or from anyone. They consider all recreation or amusement a sin and think that the mind must be constantly wrought up to just such a stern, severe pitch. This is one extreme. Others think that the mind must be ever on the stretch to invent new amusements and diversions in order to gain health. They learn to depend on excitement and are uneasy without it. Such are not true Christians. They go to another extreme. The true principles of Christianity open before all a source of happiness, the height and depth, the length and breadth of which are immeasurable. {AH 493.1}

To Refresh the Spirits and Invigorate the Body.-- It is the privilege and duty of Christians to seek to refresh their spirits and invigorate their bodies by innocent recreation, with the purpose of using their physical and mental powers to the glory of God. Our recreations should not be scenes of senseless mirth, taking the form of the nonsensical. We can conduct them in such a manner as will benefit and elevate those with whom we associate, and better qualify us and them to more successfully attend to the duties devolving upon us as Christians. {AH 493.2}

It is quite certain that such principles would apply to doing dishes on Sabbath, or any other kinds of recreation on Sabbath, or on any other day.
