Dark and semi-sweet chocolate are the worst - they containe concentrated amounts of theobromine, unlike milk chocolate, which has less. Also, the bigger the dog, the easier they can handle it if they accidentally get into some chocolate.

Unlike humans who are conditioned to a variety of foods, dogs do best when they stick to one diet and AVOID PEOPLE FOOD!!!! :yum:

Well she shouldn't be feeding him chocolate at all. What does a dog need chocolate for?

Dogs don't need it! But people tend to treat their dogs like children (that whole anthropomorphic thing) and give them what they themselves enjoy. Plus, from lots and lots of experience, dogs are the best beggars in the animal kingdom and it's so hard to say no when they gaze at you with those loveable eyeballs! My husband put a baby gate up at our dining room entrance so we can finally eat in peace. I have to sit with my back to the doorway so I can't see them looking in at us!

Actually, Baker's chocolate is the absolute worst (thank heavens for Emergency Vets on Animal Planet. You'd be suprised what you can learn) I don't feed my dogs chocolate at all...
Dog food is really best...but if I use Kibbles and Bits so they can have a variety. My shelties will actually pick out what they like and eat it first. They also get one can of wet food a day as well..(they learned really quick what it mean when I said Alpo...)

This is off subject....but if there was one thing my poodle would have jumped off a cliff for without thinking twice it was Alpo and Gainsburger's. He absolutely adored the times when he got the chance to eat these. If you don't allow your dogs to enjoy these....try some they will love you for it!

One of our dogs (the one in my avatar and signature) ate a bag of chocolate chips once...not a fun experience. She was fine, but we had to make her regurgitate.

The only time I've had to make any of the dogs I have had regurgitate was when my tibetan mastiff ate a whole bottle of ibuprofen. He was sick for a while but eventually got better.

The same dog who ate a bag of chocolate also ate a bottle of vitamins...similar results ensued. :sigh: That dog is drawn to trouble as a moth is drawn to a flame. The bad thing is that when something like that happens (which is of course behind our backs), we can never be 100% sure which dog did it, so our poor dachshund has to go through it too, just to make sure he didn't eat anything bad. Even though he's never been the one to commit the crime in these scenarios, he always seems to be the one most traumatized by the experience. But then, he tends to be a little overdramatic. :D

While working for a vet, she told one of the hunter clients we have that when they are out hunting all day, he could give his dogs 1/4 inch peices of snikers(sp?) bars candy onece every few hours. That helps to keep the energy of the dog up when they are unable to get to food for awhile.
