The other night I was watching the movie dogma, I'm sure you have all heard about it. And I was wondering if anything in that movie is real.

Yes---the filming locations, and the actor's names in the credits.

All the rest of it is a pile of baloney.

I saw the movie "Dogma."

It wasn't even FUNNY, let alone entertaining.

"Stigmata" was awful, too. Bleah.

Go dig out all the "Oh, God" movies with George Burns. The theology isn't so great, but at least you won't feel like you're wasting your time.

What was wrong with stigmata?

To Crisis:

I believe in the Stigmata of Christ, that it is something manifest in certain believers, and that this manifestation is for the purpose of promoting the faith.

With that in mind, there was NOTHING in the movie "Stigmata" about the young woman's "wounds" that was faith-promoting.

The priest was having a crisis of faith himself.

The identification of "The Gospel of Thomas," which is NOT accepted Scripture. It exists, but it is contrary to the teachings of Christianity.

The woman was not Christian herself, and her wounds did nothing to encourage her to seek God.

The "force" moving her around was completely against her will, something that is acknowledged as Satanic.

The fires which burned in the bedroom, like those in a crematorium, were pretty self-explanatory.

The whole movie was bad news.

I just finished watching the movie and I thought that it was good, not nessasarly "faith promoting" but a good movie over all.

i thought it was a good movie to, but thats not the point. hes right, it did seem rather... satanic

You can't know what evil is untill you see it, that is the way that I look at this movie. Not as a satanic movie but as a demistration of sorts.

To Dogma:

What about people who have no complete knowledge of the Bible, of Christianity? Won't they be deceived, thinking the priest represents Church teachings, that the Gospel of Thomas is legitimate Scripture, and that the woman's "Wounds of Christ" are actually a faith promoting event?

People know that not everything they see in the movies is real? If they do, they are easly taken in by things.

I disagree. Some people are very naive about things, which is not the same thing. The fact that the Gospel of Thomas is accepted by some Christians as part of Scripture and Catholicism recognizes the existence of stigmata, it would be very understandable that people would believe the movie to be correct.

But if you watch to the end of the movie it says that the vadican does not think that it authentic.

Crisis, thanks for the smile!

I think my husband and I, and sometimes our kids, are the only people in the whole world that actually watch the credits at the end of the movie. I doubt some disclaimer floating around between the name of the Key Grip and the Best Boy is really going to be taken to heart.

Besides, too many people, especially the age bracket of the audience of that movie, think the Vatican is just a bunch of old goats.

I'm sure all the "Police Academy" movies had a disclaimer by the LAPD, too.

But "Police Academy" was a funny film, this film delt with serious issues.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Stigmata presented itself as a "serious issue" movie, so as to give the impression it had something worthwhile to contribute to religious belief.

That's my complaint. Police Academy was intended to be a satire, to poke fun. You wouldn't take it seriously. But Stigmata was also a joke, only not the "funny-ha-ha" kind.

Something to think about.

In my own, very personal opinion, the movie "Stigmata" DID ridicule the Church.

The entire premise was wrong, and it misinterpreted Catholic teaching. It made the wounds of the young woman appear to be valid Stigmata, yet the woman was later clearly shown to be under the influence of evil. The priest was having a crisis of faith, himself, and if he could not counsel the woman, he should have recused himself. His personal clash with the Church was someone's interpretation of how the inside workings of the Church actually exist. The reference to the "Gospel of Thomas" made it appear to be some "secret" Scripture that the Church had been hiding from the people.

I could go on and on.
