dog training question

How do I train my dog to have good manners when people come, when we are alone they are fine they listen but when other people come over all of a sudden they are deaf they wont come they are right at the person bumping into them waggin their tails. Also when other dogs are around they lose their minds its driving me crazy I will be at the fence talking to someone and if they have a dog my dogs are whining and jumping around like little freaks they are so loud I can t barely talk yet their dog is just sitting there a little freaked out by my dogs I am sure lol

LOL - it takes a lot off patience, but it can be done. My Vizsla can be like that, but inside. Outside he is reliable but when people come IN he thinks its play time.

I think the NILIF program is great (Nothing in life is free) as well as clicker training.

Have you done any obedience with your dog? What commands is he familiar with?

I'd put the dog on a leash with a training (choke) collar. Be ready when company comes over and set up some times to visit with your neighbor over the fence. Explain what you're trying to accomplish (you're trying to train your dog to be polite) to your visitor. When Puppy starts getting obnoxious give the leash a sharp quick POP and say "NO!" or "DOWN!" or whatever is needed. Keep at it until you feel he can control himself. It will probably take a while. You should have the objective in mind that he will be able to obey you withOUT the leash on.

I am also a die-hard fan of obedience classes. There is no better environment to train a dog than in a roomfull of other dogs and strange people. If they can make it there they can make it anywhere!

Obedience classes! Even if you have already taken some, take them again as a refresher. Work with your dog daily. Teach a solid sit-stay. When your dog will sit and stay in position for 2 minutes, try it with guests. Enlist all your friends to help you; have them come over at set intervals (20 to 30 min apart). Have the dog on a leash before anyone arrives, and as soon as you hear the knock on the door, put the dog in a sit-stay. If he/she gets up, put him/her right back. No need for punishment--just put the dog back into position. When you get the behavior you want, praise and treat! The dog will soon learn that the only behavior that gets rewarded is sitting quietly.

How old are your dogs and what breed are they, Faith?

If you do decide to use a choke chain, make sure your breed is not prone to tracheal collapse, and understand the proper useage of it. You cant just put it on in any fashion, and it should be used as a training device only, not as a permanant fixture.

I use a nylon choke to walk my whippets; it's a good equalizer, but pretty easy on their throats. I leave it attached the leash and just slip it over the head of the one I want to walk. It doesn't hang up on their regular collars and tags, either.

thank you those are good suggestions my dogs are pitbulls, they are very friendly too friendly sometimes lol I am going to try to keep him on a leash and get people to come by. My husband does not want to use the choke collars because he believes that their necks are too stong and they dont really feel pain so they may hurt themselves pulling at it. The puppy is about ten months old he has not had any obedience training yet, though we are scheduled for Jan. I am a little nervous because he is so hyper around other dogs so I would like to do a little before hand. If I had the money I would do some private lessons first but I dont so I will have to figure it out. The other dog is about 7 yrs old she is better trained but still not really good listener around people or dogs although they do calm down after about 5 mins.

A choke collar is a correction tool. It should not become a permanent collar. As a goal it should hang loose when the dog is on leash. The only time it should become tight is swifty and sharply to get the dogs attention, and in conjunction with your VOICE.

And it should be OFF the dog when he's not on a leash--very dangerous.

Plan 9, I'm familiar with greyhound collars and I like the style. My Vizsla has a Premier Collar - same principle. I like how they work.
