  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a one year old Keeshond who destroys his toys. He LOVES them, but rips them to shreds causing me to have to throw them away. The stuffed animals he chews on for about five minutes before there is a hole in it and stuffing every where, and plastic toys he chews to bits in less than an hour. (And he gets so sad when I have to take them away from him, but I don't want him to choke)

Is there any doggie toy that lasts through excessive chewing/playing?? What material is best? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I have the same problems with stuffed toys. There are some stronger toys out there which are stuffed with a squeaker inside. We have one that's a fish...the dogs have managed to chew all of the fins off, but haven't been able to harm the actual stuffed part. I got it at Target, but I've seen them at PetSmart too. I'll try to look it up online and post a link.

I've found that the softer the plastic squeaky toy, the longer it lasts. In fact, I have one from when my oldest (3 year old) was a puppy and it's still good as new. But all of the harder plastic squeaky toys are destroyed very quickly.

The Kong toys last pretty well at my house.

I also try to give them some toys which are meant to be eaten--like rawhide. When I see that they're starting to tear up a toy, I take it away from them and give them a rawhide. I don't know if it makes any difference, but I do it anyway.

Usually the puppy just grabs up all the rawhides she can find and hides them from my big dog in the oddest places (behind the TV, under the pillows on my bed, etc.) :) She seems more interested in hording them than actually eating or playing with them.

*edit* They also do OK with balls. I don't give them tennis balls because they can eat the fuzz off of them. Mine did really well with a racquetball, but you'd need to check the size of your dog's mouth to make sure it couldn't swallow one.

Kongs and really big rawhides are awesome for dogs that chew a lot. It's great that your dog is chewing his toys - that stops him from chewing YOUR toys! So get some really strong, tough rubber things like Kongs and fill them with some of his food, capping off the ends with peanut butter and he will be happy for a long time. The big rawhides should last him a good long while too.

We have the same problem with one of our dogs too. The best thing that we found is finding one that has no seam and it one big surface. We have this one right now that has lasted a year, which is a mircle, that is worm shaped but it is not that little. It is big and thick and has no seam on it. The other one that has lasted a long time is a baseball that is hard to get at the seams that is stuffed.

Kongs are by far the best toy out there for a dog and are extremely hard for any size dog to break or destory. Plus you can fill them with the dogs favorite treat or buy the foam flavors or dog food, its shaped so that its harder for the dog to reach the bottom and it keeps them busy. I have a beagle and a dalalmation and we fill each of their Kongs before we head out somewhere for the enitre day and when we come home later that night they are still playing around with them to get to last mix of the beef foam, tiny dog treats, and peanut butter.

My dogs love their Kongs. Those have lasted them since we first got them....2 & 3 years ago. Rawhide chews and heavy rubber items last the longest with my dogs, though they now have calmed down enough to play nicer with stuffed toys, which they love. The stuffed animals have all lost their ears, but are intact otherwise.

I had an old t shirt that I cut into three long strips about two inches wide, folded in half, then I braided them. This lasted for a long time, although I did have to re-knot the ends once in awhile. I rotated this with the general plastic dog toys and a small wooden ash handle. Oh, also gave him an old heavy duty rubber boot--that is his boot and the only one he's allowed to have. He loves to shake it and throw it.

My dog is not chewing as much as he did the first year--that was bad, he chewed on our house, literally, the steps, everywhere anything protruded. Also, had the problem of him burying any and every rawhide I gave him, so he only gets them under close supervision!

I'd give up on the stuffed toys. My girls love stuffed toys, but only because they like tearing them apart. I have yet to find an indestructible one. I can't even give them tennis balls because they pull the fuzzy stuff off of them and I'm afraid they'll choke on it.

I highly recommend Nylabones (the hard versions, not the flexible kind). They are built to withstand an enormous amount of chewing. I have golden retrievers and this is their favorite toy. I also would recommend the Kong - because you can fill it with your dog's favorite treat and give him something to work for (getting his yummy treat out) as well as working out his need to chew and play with a toy.
