I just wanted to share this. Three of the people involved in this situation are friends on facebook with me but do not know each other. Two of them are former co-workers from different jobs, and one is a current co-worker. All three live in three different towns.
Ok, so Friend1 posted on facebook that she had to move due to flooding and best/fastest home they could move into said no dogs allowed. She had to rehome her small dog. She was heartbroken but didn't have an option. She didn't want to give the dog to just anyone. I've been wanting a pet for a while, and said I'd take her. When I went to the apartment manager's office, I was given a list of dog breeds and mixes that aren't allowed, and this dog is one of them.
I felt bad so I decided to try to help Friend1 find a home for the dog. Three friends responded and were asking questions, wanting this dog. The first one who responded wanted her most and could take her the soonest, so I told everyone Friend2 was getting the dog.
I set things up to meet with Friend1 to get the dog, and then deliver the dog to Friend2. I drove out of town to meet her. It was a difficult and sad thing to watch Friend1 say goodbye. She gave me two blankets that belong to the dog, two balls, a chewing bone, and food.
Later that evening, when it was time to pass the dog off to Friend2, I couldn't get in contact with her. She was supposed to tell me when she was ready and where to meet to get the dog, but she never did. In the meantime, my son who was with me, fell in love with dog. She is a very sweet dog. I couldn't bring her into my home though, the manager said I could get evicted if I did.
I scrambled to find a dogsitter until I could find a place for dog. Friend3 who had been interested, offered to keep her temporarily, so I jumped at the offer. I knew Friend3 had other animals, but I had never been to her house and was not aware of what it was like. Friend3 three owns three medium size dogs who are very active, two cats, three turtles, all living inside, and one of the dogs has a severe bladder problem. I was not aware of these details. I had nowhere else for this small dog to go on such short notice. This little dog was terrified and overwhelmed. I felt sick and afraid for her. I left her but decided it would only be for one night. I didn't know what I was going to do, but I was going to figure something out. I left everything with her that Friend1 gave me so she could have some familiarity and comfort. I worried about the dog all night long.
The next day Friend2 said she still wanted the dog, but had a family emergency the day before, and wanted to meet me to get the dog. I actually left work early to do this (we didn't have much work to do and kept running out of tasks anyway). I rushed to get my son so he could hold the dog in the van while I drove.
GAH! The nightmare.
The dog was trembling and cowered down in a chair. I got her in my arms and she climbed up on my shoulder and put her face against my neck in my hair, like she was trying to hide. Both her blankets were wet with urine and filthy with dirt and debris. Her tennis balls were dirty and had urine on them. We got her out into the van, and I looked at her real good while my son was holding her.
SHE WAS COVERED IN FLEAS AND TICKS!!!! You could see them crawling all over her.
I looked at her blankets, and yep, fleas and ticks on them, too.
I told Friend2, and she and I were both upset. Friend2 was sympathetic, but did not want to bring the dog into her home with all those bugs. What she did instead was post of picture of the dog on some kind of pet board, asking for someone to take her.
My son was upset, too. He was trying to help and was a real trouper. I bought flea and tick products, and pet bag to sneak the dog into my home. I bathed her and put flea stuff on her, and used a flea comb...
Later that night, Friend2 said she already found a someone who was interested in the dog. I spoke with this stranger on the phone, and then drove out of town to meet with her in public at a place with cameras on the parking lot. Her husband came with her. They seem like nice people, have children and another dog that is also a small breed, and they felt like their dog needed a sister (both females).
My son had ridden with me to give the dog to them, and he was sad the whole way home, and very worried. The new people said they would send pictures of her so we can see how she is doing.
Friend1 was texting, asking how her dog was doing. I told her part of the truth, but not all of it. I didn't want to upset her or make her more worried. I just feel awful, and I have to deal with fleas in my van and home today.
I told my son we would focus on getting a pet soon, because in that short of a time he became obsessed with taking care of the dog. He said, "Yes, but let's get a cat instead."
