  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hi. I was wondering about how many people out there who have a dog and a cat in the same house and how they behave towards eachother. Is it just nonsence that dogs and cats are mortal enemies? Because my dog is large and absolutely loves my cat and takes care of her while they're together. Whenever people come over and see that they are together, they always ask why they are civil towards eachother. Are my pets alianated, is this Dog/Cat war noncense or does it just depend on the nature of the animals? What is your opinion?

I think it depends on a lot of different things. I think cats and dogs can and often DO get along very well with eachother. Of course, there are those who don't. But, generally speaking I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be perfectly normal for them to be at least amicable with one another, even if they're not the best of friends.

The reason people say this is many larger dogs see cats as "prey" and cats see larger dogs as threats so people interpret this as some epic dog/cat battle. So most people don't realize how easily dogs and cats can live together in the same house, which is why they ask questions. It can be very simple to teach dogs to at the least tolerate cats, and in response the cats generally realize they are no longer a threat.

Or some dogs have a very low prey drive, so it never registers that the cat may be prey, and the cat never feels threatened and in fact feels comfortable around the dog. This is probably the case with your pair. If only my dog would tone down the prey drive

And as ChrisWinston's photo above proves, dogs may even accept the cat as a pack member and affectionately submit to them. I can't say much about the cat as I have no experience in cat behavior but it is obviously enjoying the situation.

It sounds like you have a happy family, I pray your happiness continues forever:)

The cat above I had the tremendous pleasure of watching up close as he would box my dog's head, with one paw then the next, kind of slapping, without claws drawn, hitting my dog's nose and ears and side of his mouth. Cassidy would sit there and allow it to happen. I can only wonder what he was thinking - "Are you having fun, cat, 'cause this doesn't bother me." Cassidy would never ever ever try to bite the cat or smack the cat with his paw. Sometimes he'd chase the cat for good fun but he likes chasing squirrels much more. Even after chasing the cat the cat would still be my dog's friend... but I don't know if I'd call it a friendship, they didn't sleep next to each other or watch TV together, it was more of a friendly acquaintanceship - they co-existed in the same house in peace without drawing blood. For the time I had that roommate with the cat it was interesting to see the K9 and feline getting along just fine and dandy!

What about the ancient Egyptians, I'm not so good at mythology or history but didn't they revere cats, although they did have a jackal god too, but I'm wondering if we take a mythological/historical beliefs approach how many cultures have a similar legend regarding cats and dogs... I'm going to do some google searches^_^

and if you do a word search on dogs in the bible it seems in that culture dogs were disgusted not even worth mentioning expect to insult someone.

It never occured to me to take this approach, this oughta be fun.
Thanks Silent_J:thumbsup:

Ok this is a really informative site has lots of links and even touches on the Salem witch trials, has a lot about the connection between cats and witches, and egyptian and norse mythology concerning cats
http://www.koreananimals.org/myths.htm
This site is very interesting, lists some common myths the Korean culture holds about cats and dogs, like transporting your dog in your car is bad luck!
http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/3-19-2002-14972.asp
this site has a whole bunch of stuff on animals in mythology

I'll stop there for now, I don't know if any of you are interested in mythology or historical beliefs but even if I don't study it often I do find it fascinating.

to CF!!!

I think cats are just as friendly, in general, but easily intimidated/scared by a big dog like that big, white, furry beast of mine above. He's harmless as a kitten but to little kids, squirrels, and cats, he's big and menacing. I think certain cats can sense when a dog won't harm them and they'll warm up to each other and live in peace & harmony.

I agree but I suppose my opinion would be considered biased, me being a dog person and all.
I think their more friendly because of their pack nature, where as cats are naturally independent and need less affection, although you'd never know it coming to my house. We have one dog and one cat addicted to attention, and we have two other cats and two other dogs who are always waiting for their turn.

Usually if a dog is raised with cats as a puppy, and a cat is raised with a dog as a kitten, then they do not recognize them as "the enemy" ... but as part of the "pride" for the cat and "pack" for the dog. In other words, they think of each other as family. A dog not raised around cats will usually consider the cat as prey, and the cat will consider the dog as an aggressor, even if they are not. It depends on what they learn as they grow up.

My dog adores our cat. The cat thinks the dog (44 lbs.) is a play toy, but really they do love each other.

Also, I had a nearly wild cat a few years ago who was raised on a ranch out in the country, and we had a dog when we brought her to live here. She had a terrible time getting used to the dog, even though she was very mellow and polite to the cat. The cat grew to love the dog, but it took two years for her to even be in the same room with the dog. They did become very affectionate toward each other after a few years, but it was a battle at the beginning.
