I'll write to my representatives, and tell them they need to do something about this, but I won't hold my breath. It's an awful lot of money for something that will only help in the future. It would be like building up levees in New Orleans - people would complain about the cost, and then when something is prevented, they will say the old system would have worked just as well.
As for civil libertarians being against the rights of people taken away - yes. What right is being taken away here? The right to fake your boarding pass? I don't think that one is covered in our constitution.
Competent security measures don't necessarily remove rights. You don't have any right to fake a boarding pass, or to travel under a fake name, or to misrepresent yourself to authorities.
