Does one have to be baptized to be saved?

Since it doesn't say anywhere in the Bible that you are condemned if you DO get baptized, JUST GET BAPTIZED, and you'll have your fire insurance.

You have to be united to the Lord before you can receive the Spirit. That means the one baptism spoken of in Ephesians 4:5 is the (water) baptism into Christ. After you are baptised into Christ (aka: baptised in the Name of the Lord; calling on the Name of the Lord--Acts 2:38; Acts 22:26) you are united to Him and then you can recieve the Holy Spirit. This means that it is not the baptism of the Spirit that saves you, but your baptism into Christ.

When God sent the Spirit to the home of Cornelius before the people were baptised in water, He did it to show that salvation was now available to the gentiles as well as the Jews. This was the exception, not the rule.

Baptism is not needed to be saved.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." John 3:16-18

Faith in Christ is all that is needed to be saved according to this.

I should clarify. I don't claim to be the knowledge source for this information. This is just my understanding from the text. Of course, Baptism never hurts, and it would always be a good idea. I just don't believe God would choose to not save someone who is not baptized. Not every one of God's children has the convenience to receive a baptism though they might still follow the path of Christ.

I was baptized as a baby as a Catholic, but am just Christian now looking for a new church home. I want to be re baptized as an adult. I am not sure how this falls into the different Christian denominations as well. It is heavy on my mind. Thank you and God bless...

You were already baptized so there is absolutely NO need to have it done again! God did it right the first time.

In baptism God works to bring you the benefits of the cross. This is the connection that a lot of denominations miss. They focus on the water and forget that God attached promises by His Word to that water. In baptism, you receive the promises of God such as forgiveness that was won at the cross, the Holy Spirit, being clothed in Christ's righteousness and your sins are washed away. These things are not just spiritual, but because God promises them to us by His Word, these are actual benefits you received at your baptism. You don't need to have it done again.

Now, concerning salvation. Baptism is necessary but not absolutely necessary. The reason I say this is because God uses means to bring us to faith in order to believe so that we might have salvation. Baptism is one of those means but also hearing the Word of God is another means that He uses to bring us to faith. If someone hears the Word of God and receives faith but doesn't get baptized and dies, that person has salvation by grace through FAITH.

The Lord has commanded baptism to all the nations. After knowing all the benefits applied in baptism, who wouldn't want it? But, there is no need to have it done again, God doesn't make mistakes and didn't mess up your first baptism.

my perception of heaven & hell is this...

heaven is dying with no regrets meaning before you die if you're satisfied with your life and achievements you leave the earth in peace.

hell is leaving the world with regrets and a feeling of being unsatisfied knowing you could have done more with your time on earth.

your last thought projected through infinity is either heaven or hell. the choice is yours...

I'm very skeptical on this issue at hand. I believe if you are saved and on the path to rightousness you should wanna further your faith and proceed in baptism. Don't just stop at verbally agreeing to accepting the Lord.

I was also born and raised Catholic (for 18 years!) before I got saved. I got baptized in my new church as a symbol of my commitment to Christ and the cleansing of my past sins. It was hard for my mom to accept (my whole family and all of my friends except one are non-Christians), because it nullified all of the sacraments I received as a Catholic. But getting baptized was very refreshing (no pun intended) and made my commitment to Christ and becoming a Christian feel "real."

Seems to me that if you know that Peter said that you need to repent and be baptised, then you need to do just that.

Your Catholic baptism is certainly perfectly valid. Not only is there no need to be re-baptised, it's not even possible to be validly baptised more than once.

No, you don't have to be baptized to be saved. The thief on the cross was not baptized, but Jesus said that he would be with Him in paradise.

But it helps to be baptized, and we are commanded to be baptized.

And yes, you can be baptized more than once. When, at age 25, I was new to the Foursquare church, I knew in my spirit that the Lord wanted to me to be baptized, but I fought it. I reasoned that I had been saved at 19 and filled with the Spirit at 21, and besides, I had been sprinkled as a child. I told the Lord, and said I don't need to be baptized. Then He answered, He didn't need to be baptized either.

I was baptized.

I was sitting in church one day, years later, watching people get baptized. I began crying, because the Lord opened my spiritual eyes, and I saw people in terrible bondage as they got into the water. It looked like heavy iron collars. But when they came up out of the water, those collars were broken. The collars were still there, but the Lord gave me the understanding that as they walked in the Spirit those broken collars would fall off.

So is this scriptural? Always look for confirmation in Scripture. I believe it is. Look at Romans 6, where we go into the water, baptized into Christ's death, to be raised again to newness of life in Him, Romans 6:3-4. Something dies. We still have to shake it off, but I believe that the hold of sin on us dies. Look at v. 6:14 where is says, "for sin shall not have dominion over you..."

May I suggest? Get baptized, if you haven't already. And then do something radical: walk with the Lord. Spend time with Him everyday, just loving Him. If you love Him, you will not sin against Him, John 14:15, and the sin tendencies will be shaken off.

Baptism is clearly a personal choice..on that i have taken despite being Baptised as a young child but felt i needed to be re-baptised as an adult...was a blessed and joyous experience one that i will never forget...i am quite a new convert to the Christian world and my views are rather simplistic so you will have to forgive me that...especially in the ways i get things across which you will clearly see on here in future!
