  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does love equal tolerance?

In a society where we are supposed to be free...yes, so long as it doesn't interfere with the autonomy of others. I can have an opinion on what others do, but I can't do anything about it, and I can't force my opinion on them unless they ask for it.
I guess if you believe we have the freedom to do so, and that you cannot interfere with my beliefs, I'm free to keep these beliefs. By your statement, you realize you are stating you cannot stop me from going with these beliefs. (If you do, then you'd be doing the very thing you speak of, and that is preventing me my beliefs.)

I understand what you mean, but that's the problem with that particular stance. To say I'm wrong for taking my view is wrong, but when you do it, it's ok.

Peachpit said:
Firstly, because I don't think they're hurting themselves any more than I'm hurting myself in an average day. Gays know that you think they're sinners, if they're Christian they probably know they're sinners. But, I know I'm a sinner, and I don't need people to point it out to me on a daily basis.
I don't think any sins I do are ok. Do you think the sins you do are ok?

Do you really have people in your face everyday telling you that you are sinning? Just what sins are you up to that they are that obvious?

Peachpit said:
Secondly, we're also dealing with tolerance. Do you tolerate other types of sin? Tomorrow (Friday), go into a Wendy's or a McDonald's, and make sure you tell each person eating a burger that they're sinners. On Saturday, go to the Gap, and tell each person you see who tries on a clothing of mixed fabrics that they're sinners. Then on Sunday, go any place you'd like, where people are working on the Sabbath, and tell them they're sinners. Make sure that at any given time, if you see anyone who is divorced that you tell them that they're a sinner.
Yes, anytime someone brings up a topic, and asks what we think, I'll tell them a particular view that I think is consistent from the bible.

For example, the person in this thread spoke about love, and tolerance of sin, and that's the answer I intended to give.

Peachpit said:
We tolerate all of these other sinners, but we don't tolerate gays. Why do you suppose that is?
Maybe you should asks about other sins, and we can talk about those? That way we'd confront those sins instead. Picking up a specific sin, and pointing out homosexuality, will bring up direct answers about homosexuality. Do you agree with that, or do you feel another sin such as sabbath would be a natural extension of homosexuality.

I think you maybe venting to me about previosu discussions. It's ok, but remember, I'm trying to respond to direct comments, or questions. I really haven't done the things you suggest, such as talk about your sins on a daily basis.

Well, yes, actually. Not usually specifically, but there are a lot of Christians that witness to atheists and homosexuals on this site and call people like me a sinner.

Why do you wait? Isn't this thread about approaching people without waiting for them to ask if you approve?

You come to a christian site, and have people telling you that sins are sins?

This may surprise you, but I am sinner too. Forgiven sinner, but still, i am not sinless. Don't be offended that you are considered a sinner, every single person on earth except one, has been considered a sinner.

You may have missed the question about what sins you do that feel are ok to do.

This may surprise you, but I just don't have the time to talk to every single person on earth. I actually have not approached the several thousand users here at christian forums. I find it a bit of a time challenge to manage the few posts I do here on the site. I think judging by the number of viewers that are recorded, I think i may actually get several hundred views of my posts. Not bad, but it's all I can do with just a few minutes to post.

Does that make sense?

No, I can say you're view is wrong. But because we're here in a discussion forum to discuss such things. I would not go into a church and start telling everyone their views on homosexuals are wrong, because that would be unfair, and unethical. Like I said, if a homosexual comes on here and debates his lifestyle you can tell him he's wrong, and this would be the appropriate place to do so. But to approach a homosexual to tell him his lifestyle is wrong, I believe to be unethical. That all comes out more complicated that I thought, but I think you get the idea.

I fully support your right to say what you want, but that doesn't mean I think you should say it. I do however feel that if you take action to interfere in the autonomy with someone else, I have a right, and an obligation to defend their autonomy. Live and let live, if you don't bother them, they shouldn't bother you.

Excepting the assumption that we might have differences in what is and is not a sin, no. But I'm not going to pretend, or profess that I'm not a sinner. Planks and dust and all.

knightlight72 said:

I don't, that's my point. Its obvious that I'm a sinner because I'm human, and nobody bugs me about it, but homosexuals get it on a fairly regular basis. Furthermore, its obvious who divorcees are, but nobody gives them the hard time we give homosexuals. Why the double standard?

Is it okay to tolerate divorce? Would you approach a divorcee and tell them they're a sinner, like you're suggesting we do with gays?

More society in general, than other discussions, but pretty much true.

I was listening to Catholic radio yesterday and the Priest was mentioning how important it is to love people. He then said loving people doesn't mean letting them do whatever they want and being quiet about it, especially if they are doing mortal sins. He said, if someone is seriously sinning we should speak up to warn them out of love and concern. What do you think of such reasoning?

I agree, with the concept but probably not his (the priest's) idea of sin, mortal or otherwise.

Yea, I understand, that's the same reason I feel ok in doing the same, except reversing that role.

I think it was my point as well. Who has people calling them sinners everyday? If you do, I think there may be some other issues going on, and God has a huge message for ya. I'm just not confident I know of any homosexuals that get called over by christians to say to them about sin. Persoanlly, i find many people are uncomfortable about confrontation, so generally avoid it. Many people don't know that evangalism doesn't require tham to walk around carrying a giant sign painted with the message REPENT SINNERS". Sometimes just simply being there when needed, offering time to listen, and an offer of prayer is all you need to do. You can do that to a total stranger. Who would be offended by the offer of prayer when they are in need? The biggest form of evangalism is living the example.

Peachpit said:

I think you may have seen or heard or imagined some real doozies, but being christian doesn't mean you're an enemy of the people, it means you're an enemy of the devil.

Peachpit said:

I'm not sure of what people are saying divorce is normal, and should be made easier to make available.

If I said adultery is fine, wouldn't you think that is not good?None the less, the question is would I be willng to tell someone that I feel that divorce is not good, and God wants something more, yes, I would be. I find more people are interested in hearing more, or discussing it, rather than just walking away. I suppose it might have to more to do with intention. Walking up with a big sign as I earlier said may put people on the defensive. Try and show you are not against the person.

Think about when you accepted Christ. Remember how great that was? I want that for others. I know that I found Jesus at the right time, and even though I would have liked to have known Jesus sooner, my time was my time. Jesus wants to use us, to help others find Him agains.

I do not see Jesus wishing us to hide or keep this to ourselves. Take care and God bless. I do think we understand each other's position now. :groupray:

In your view of sin but using my "feelings," I feel that homosexuality is "okay to do."

My friend Joe has the right viewpoint, I think. When asked about gays, he says he believes it's a sin, but he won't not be friends with someone because they were gay. And he wouldn't try to switch them either. He lets his feelings be known, and that's it. I think that's the right way for any sin issues.
