  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Orthodox liturgy is practically nothing but Scripture--it is full of it. We are encouraged to read the Scriptures. However, that is different than Sola Scriptura. Let me ask a question--what has Sola Scriptura lead to? Does it lead to unity or division? How many new denominations have come into being since the doctrine of Sola Scriptura came into being in the 16th Century?

Even the Scriptures themselves talk about following Tradition, both oral and written. People try to put the Scriptures in a role that it was never intended to have, and the Scriptures themselves say that. The Scriptures themselves say that they don't contain everything (read the last few verses of the Gospel of John and St. Paul's admonition to follow both oral and written Tradition).

LinuxUser, I stand with you in awesome reverence for God's Word. But I am so fallible and how can I comprehend Words breathed by God? When I first became born again God's Word, His Bible became alive and for the first time His Words illumined my heart and soul. That I could continue to bask in His Light forever! But since joining this forum I am so dismayed to see all the dissension and opinions and dogmas and divisions over God's Word. Something is very wrong and I think we need another visit from Jesus to straighten this mess out! O Lord, please, did You anticipate all this confusion? Or is it just I that am confused? Help me and others who are confused to understand and know Your Truth, Heavenly Father!

Linux, Many in the body of Christ have been stripped naked of common sense, righteous understanding, and are now outside, lost, cold, and hungry. This is the result, the finished product of the many religious hucksters that have infiltrated our churches.

Lets also include pride. What is the one predictable characteristics of a man's pride? It is predictably dangerous.

I join you in your dismay. So many want to follow traditions instead of God's Word here and with all the atheists it makes one want to throw in the towel

Linux, What storms? Ever since I met the Lord, I have been walking on water. Four years ago, my home was destroyed by a fire, No problem. In April, my home was hit by a tornado in Alabama, again no problem. Like I said, ever since I met the Lord, I have been walking on water. Its a pleasure to meet you.

Here is another one of the many saying I have written for purposes like this. You wrote,

"Seems like the majority here would rather follow something in addition to the Bible. Will anyone stand up and be counted for God's Word."

Phil reply, "For many, all they need is to believe in something. That something can be anything at all. So why don't they believe in Christ? Its Jesus who has given us the gift, and freedom to believe in something."

Some folks have a higher preference of hearing themselves speak I agree.

I'd prefer (for the most part) not to because I really dont value my thoughts or opinions that highly.

I do prefer scripture, that would be a dream come true for me

Now what good would that do? The only way to get unity is by force. Jesus left them basicly the same they were when He came. Just read the Gospels and Acts.

Dear LinuxUser. Perhaps Jesus saw this coming, and made it easier and simpler for us to read and to understand and follow? God gave us His Ten Commandments, ( loving advice to us) and Jesus gave us two Commandments: and the two which Jesus gave us contain All what God gave us in His Ten Commandments. In Matthew, chapter 22, verse 35-40, Jesus tells a Lawyer: " The first and great Commandment is: Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and love thy neighbour as thyself." Then Jesus states this fact: " On these two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." That is easy enough for us to remember, and Jesus will give us His Love and Joy, and the Holy Spirit will give us His Love, too. Jesus told us: " Ask and ye will receive." Then we thank God and share all Love and Joy with our neighbour. Paul tells us in 1) Corintians, chapter 13, verses 4-8, what Love is, and what God wants from us. Not only a good feeling, God wants us to change from being selfish and unloving to becoming loving and caring, helping and forgiving. God is Love, and God wants loving children/sons and daughters. God will see our sincere efforts to love all we know and all we meet, as we love ourselves, and God will approve and bless us. God will also know that we love Him, because we follow His Commandments to love. We will stumble and fail often perhaps, but we will get up and carry on: we will ask God`s Forgiveness, and God will forgive us as we will forgive those who transgress/sin against us. Jesus our Saviour is waiting to lead us back to God where we came from. Love is the Key to God`s Kingdom, and love will carry us home. We have years to become the children our Heavenly Father wants, and Jesus is our Way. The Love God wants from us: selfless and sincere. I say this with love, LinuxUser. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

I try to read it daily (usually before bed). The nights I don't read it, I am reading a book about a holy person and/or saint and it they reiterate the Scriptures in there very often as well. :)

has any love and respect for Scripture anymore? Seems like the majority here would rather follow something in addition to the Bible. Will anyone stand up and be counted for God's Word
Has commentaries and books done more harm than good?

Do we have Biblical examples of Christian’s writing any books (or do we just have some short letters)?

Did Christ ever get into arguments with the Pharisees over the dead scholarly writings they wanted to discuss or did he go back to the Bible?

Jesus said trouble would come because of the Word.
(But not all can understand His words)

Douay-Rheims Bible
And they have no root in themselves, but are only for a time:
and then when tribulation and persecution ariseth for the word
they are presently scandalized.

Weymouth New Testament
but they have no root within them. They last for a time; then,
when suffering or persecution comes because of the Message,
they are immediately overthrown.

So wherever the word is sown, there comes trouble in one form or
another. Much twisting of Scripture, much UNDERmining Scripture
in attempt to make it subjective..This is to be expected guy.
But!
God breathed, Spirit filled Scripture is only subjective to God and
even then, who would separate them? lol

I stand with you Linuxuser.... Keep speaking truth in love and you will
bless everyone who hears your voice, Let your speech be as the very
oracles of God (1 Pet 4)
As we fill our hearts with HIM (through His Spirit and His Word) what
can come from our mouths but that good treasure ?!
A good man, out of the good treasure in his heart, brings forth GOOD things.
The makings of a transformation to Kingdom living right here on earth.

God bless you

It sounds like you are reading your Bible within the tradition of a particular type of Protestantism.;)

Yes, lots of us do.
Why do you think we don't?
