Does anyone read the Bible for memorization sake?

After I read the Bible a few times, I felt like I knew what to expect. And I did for the structure of the Bible. Instead of getting bogged down in Numbers anymore, I read like Proverbs or stuff Jesus said. I read the stuff that I may have forgot in order to try and memorize its teachings.

Even though my college (Carnegie Mellon) has done a lot of work advancing the field of psychology based on how computers are built... I think there is an air of mystery behind how the brain functions. One of the things I noticed today is that when I was thinking about,"How much should one give? The widow gave all she had, but if I give all I have then it'd impair me greatly." Then I remembered the Proverb

Pr 12:9

I'm not sure why that proverb popped up in my head and answered my question, but I do know that it can be a strong case for memorization of important information. We're in the Google era where people can answer any question by just browsing for a webpage about it. It works almost the same way as when calculators came out and gave math teachers a hard time. Even though the knowledge is out there, we can't assume that we have it all after just a few readings... I think we really need to pound it in our brains.

No, but I do pick some of it up. A prime example is my favorite verse, Galatians 3:28. It's beautiful because it shows how Christ's life and mission was greater than any social walls we can put up to destroy ourselves and others. For me, I usually won't be able to tell you the verse and chapter, but I'm certain I can tell you if it's from the bible.

i used to when i was younger for school and sunday school and all that but don't bother with it now. God has a way of bringing verses to my mind when i need to be reminded of them or share them with others. My responsibility is to actually read it so He can remind me of what I've already read :)

I usually don't try to memorize, but sometimes things just stick with me. So sometimes verses do pop into my head randomly when they are applicable to life. I have some verses memorized from when I was younger and in bible classes, and verses I heard over and over again, or ones that I know as songs, or my favorite verses.
But I think it's awesome when an applicable verse pops into my head that I had never really memorized, I guess just the fact that I had read it in the past it can be remembered somehow...
It was similar with spanish, I kinda learned some, then forgot it, then when I needed to communicate with people on a Mexico missions trip the correct words were popping into my mind, and I just knew they were the right words, but at the same time I wasn't because I didn't remember the word.
memory can be pretty cool

Yeah, I sometimes remember stuff is in the bible, but don't know the verse or chapter. Sometimes I have a few guesses of where it is, and so I look it up somehow... and other times I have no clue where in the bible it came from, but I'm certain it's there so I search for a long time until I find it. I just have to know keywords.... I need a bible concordance.... the one in the back of my bible isn't adequate enough.

umm.. only posting to other forums is against the rules as i understand it. Biblegateway should be fine...

They told me I can't post any URL because they consider it a form of advertising. Like my own personal website that has nothing but a description of when God spoke to me and the events of that day... I got my post deleted because I posted a link to that single page that has nothing else on it.

Maybe they just like to single me out. Anyway, I'm glad someone got away with posting a URL because maybe someday they'll let me do it.

I think you can post your personal website link on your profile page. There is an external website area on there I think.. or at least there was.

when i was on staff we didn't allow personal websites to be posted either outside of profiles and the area of the site especially created for that) because thats spamming so its not very surprising if they still wouldn't allow that. most forums don't.

When I read, I write down important verses in a scripture journal I have. I take lots of notes in church and so on in this journal also. Meditate or mentally "chew" on verses you read about and often times when the time comes the Holy Spirit gives you the words and verses to say. Keeping your relationship with God warm and not grow stale is key. Keep feeding from the Word and the Holy Spirit will teach you what you need to know. Often times I can think of verses and book, chapter, number in a conversation or even when I'm posting on here without looking it up. If you take the time to really deeply think on the verse and allow the Spirit to teach you, you will remember it when the time comes.

[edit] the irony here is this reminds me of a verse i'm a little fuzzy on *facepalm* When Jesus is talking about persecution in the end times, He says they will not think of what they say when they are tried but will speak with the Holy Spirit.
