• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I remember the last day I actually felt normal. It was a Sunday in October of 2010. I remember quite distinctly that I felt normal that day. I have completely stopping worrying about ever feeling normal again.

I think for me it was the suddenness of the onset, from bounding around as a 25-year-old, with legs like springs to walking about like a lame old man, with legs that felt like they were slogging through glue constantly. Plus, the aches and pains and having no point of origin for them. I could no longer say "Ah this is because I overexerted myself at the gym." Instead, there was just pain and more pain. Don't get me wrong I can't change where I am or what happened, however, I don't think I've ever quite got over how quick the transformation was from the person I was to the person I became and am now.

Turmeric is good for all sorts of stuff and esp. for preventing, delaying dementia. I think I posted earlier why we are tired no matter how much sleep we get. The brain scans they did on "normals" and those with fibro clearly showed that those with fibro, their brains do not sleep---even when they are asleep. The normal brains shut down during sleep, our do not so we do not get "restorative sleep" like normal people do. And, of course, everyone is different, some people have more or less of this than others. Fibro is a malfunction of the brain--it's like the brain is basically short circuiting. Mine has the hiccups quite frequently.

Various things work for various individuals. There are a lot of things which might help - or not. With most of us it seems to be a lot of trial and error. If you have not done so, you need to find a good doctor who may be able to prescribe medication which will abate your pain and give you decent rest.

Turmeric needs black pepper and coconut oil for maximum abortion--or so they say. I've been using this also for several months now. haven't noticed much pain relief, but my energy levels have gone up. I use Magnesium malate (has to be malate for best results). How do you use you vinegar> I take 1 Tb in a glass of water with Stevia in it. You can use it more than once a day, but must be careful as it is acid and can mess with your tooth enamel.
Nothing helped me more than medical marijuana. I cooked it, with water and coconut oil (blended it completely in some of the water in a blender first) then I added sunflower lecithin--drank it twice a day. Saved my sanity! I used it for 1 1/2 years, couldn't afford it any more. When I quite, I did not go back to my former levels of pain and it's been about 2 1/2 years since I took it. If interested I can give you the exact measurements. I never, eer got high. I suede high CBD low THC. Helped me to sleep also. I've taken tramadol for years. I need about 3-4 a day. On the MM I needed only about 2.

my fibro was triggered by a car accident
(someone hit me on hwy), when diagnosed first thing rheumatologist told me was to move out west, that has been my dream for a long time as it would be nice to be pain free/have less pain
when I was working, I paid for massotherapy which
helped a lot
some days are better than others (I don't take meds but use heat)
spring/fall feel better than summer/ wtr
and some days I need more help from God to keep on smiling and be optimistic as I always want to be my best for our child
my biggest struggle is to keep stress down as when I'm more stressed, seems the pain increases and sleep decreases

We no longer react to stress as we used to. I was always able to handle stress well, after this hit, I found myself very easily overwhelmed with even a little stress. I couldn't open a box of cereal one day and got so flustered I literally just threw it at my husband screaming--"You open it!!" I was nearly shaking. I was so upset over such a little thing. I've gotten a little better. I don't like getting like that. When I feel the frustration I try to pray first to calm down. My husband had been very patient.
I worked in the medical field for nearly 30 years working with a lot of stress, and I could always remain calm under the worst of situations--not any more. I also used to type 80 words a minute with maybe one mistake--- can not type one sentence now without many mistakes. I was a champion speller, now--thank God for spellcheck, even then I have to proof read several times. It is not Alzheimer's--I got checked. We will check out normal with normal brain tests, what we fail in is the Stroop test. I took that one 3 times in a row, right on line, even after the 3rd time, thinking I was really doing well by then -- took me twice as long as a normal person, which is normal for a fibro brain. You can look it up and take the test.

agree about stress thing....
never heard of the stroop test; will need to look that up, thanks! (not one for going to Drs, so haven't gone to rheum since yr I was diagnosed; imagine more things may have been discovered since then)
it's definitely a weird condition as you look totally fine and one day you might only be at a pain level of 4 and think wow, I'm getting better and couple days later, you're at a 9 and you wonder, what happened? sometimes it gets worse if I do too much, like at a festival for 5 hrs with kid and husband having fun and then my body will pay for that but we can't stop living!
the fibro fog is weird as feel I'm fairly smart and then every once in a while can't think of a word or trip over words....other day I made up a word....armball! (that is your arm plus elbow...it just spit out of my mouth) least I give kid and husband laughs!

Yah--my husband has gotten very good at "filling in the blanks"---all of a sudden I stop talking 'cause I can't remember the word I need. One day it was aspirin, could not for the life of me get the word out--even though I am looking at the bottle! I had to point to it--drives me nuts. Overdoing is our enemy, and so very easy to do. Most of us have been type "A" personalities, on the go and always doing--it is hard to have to lull back, but if we don't, the pain gets much worse. We have to keep doing, just not so much.

how do you all help yourself to sleep better?
(w/o meds as I don't take prescription meds)

use heat during day but can't at night
if I wake and in too much pain, can't get back to sleep

thanks in advance for any tips!

Good luck with that! Been working on it for years! When I started taking more supplements, I found myself sleeping better. Magnesium is a must for us-but it should be magnesium malate which is very hard to find, and I usually get it on line. Malate is also found in apples, the more sour the better, the sourness is the malate. If you get diarrhea, just cut back a little. I take double the B complex --I was taking only one a day, the recommended amount, but do better doubling it. I do take Beta carotene and Vit C, but that I take for my skin, without both of those, I get cystic acne. I have to take no less than 10, 000 of V D3---we monitor my blood levels about every 3 months that, you can take too much of. The D3 helps my back pain. I also take about 400 of calcium citrate. Calcium seems to help with my cramping, which a little extra Potassium also helps me. Supplements have to be monitored with labs to be sure you're Ok with the amount.
I've tried Melatonin for sleep--It did nothing for me and I was all the way up to about 30 mg before giving up. It has helped others, start with the smallest amount first. Take about 30 min before going to bed, turn off all lights. There are teas, like chamomile, stay away from teas with caffeine at night. For some, the scent of Lavender helps, they dab some under their nose and on their chest. It doesn't help me much as my smeller doesn't work as it should. Valerian is also supposed to help, on me it is a stimulant.
For me, hot chiles help me a lot with pain, the hotter the better! It tricks the body into sending out endorphins as it thinks you're in pain and just kicks them up a notch. On me, I feel the affects in about 20 min, But I loved hot foods before all this and I can now take it pretty hot without any problems. Just don't go insane and try to go for the hottest--you have to work up to it! It can cause stomach cramping, not to mention, what goes in must come out and it will work again! But with less pain I can sleep better--of course.
One thing that I do which really helps with my pain is computer solitaire. Sounds strange, I know, but it works. I can only do the one suite, more than that my brain goes into overdrive trying to figure it out--one suite just sort of numbs my brain and can help make me sleepy. I read something that it has to do with the brain and numbers and I don't remember what the deal is, but I just play it till I get sleepy. Trying to keep moving without overdoing it throughout the day also helps--it tires you out but if you over do then you can't sleep because you're in more pain!
Everyone is different, so what works for one, will not work on others. Trial and error is the name of the game.

That is D3--not just D that is important--again must check blood levels to avoid too much. 5,000 does enough for most people, right now it looks like 10,000 for me is borderline I may need more. But--I've had colon cancer surgery last year and that is one reason I need so much extra stuff, though I started taking extra before I was diagnosed with the cancer. And --- I used to take medical marijuana--for about 1 1/2 years, I had to quite only because I could not afford it anymore. However, it literally saved me. I was in such pain I was crying everyday, all day--I drank it, cooked it in a crock pot---gives a whole new meaning to the word ":crockpot"--I never once got high and it helped me sleep the most and helped me with the pain the most. For any real, true info do not pay any attention to American educated doctors--check out the Israeli's--they are prominent in research on it. If they say it is bad for such and such reason, them I will believe but no doctor in this country has any true accurate info on it for it has been Federally illegal to print anything good about it since the 1930's, and still is.They just do not enforce it anymore.

sorry that you had colon cancer and was in so much pain
"crockpot" lol
always wondered if it would help but was at concert yrs ago where I smelled it and thought it smelled horrible but medical m. is probably dif? as in doesn't smell bad? our state doesn't even have it yet

if one has to get bloodwork to take D3, that won't work for me as am a Dr avoider
haven't gone to a rheum. since my diagnosis yr. and haven't been to Dr since the required physical to adopt and that was the last time I had bloodwork; been a parent now for 8 yrs
just really dislike going to Drs so even have husband take our child for her yrly physical

just ate a granny smith and feel better already lol

Medical smells just as bad!! I cooked it outside-the one time I did cook it inside the whole house stank for about a month no matter how much we aired it out! You can take the D3 without a Dr prescription, but like I said, you can take too much. If you go outside and get sunlight on you, you should be OK without it. I worked indoors and seldom go out anymore, I should just sit in the sunlight but I do not.

Hey everyone. I suffer from Fibromyalgia. It really sucks. I was diagnosed in November of 2010. Who else on here has this debilitating disorder?
Ive had this for a long time. The only thing that helps me is cbd oil (have to make sure you have a trustworthy company).
It does suck esp if ur a young person. Its a huge hinderance on ALOT of things. Luckily ( i know its not really >luck<) God is there through it all, even to the very end.

A close family member had this back in the last century.
It took 7 to 15 years to be free of it.
That was before they discovered that it is almost always caused by mercury toxicity in the mind and body. Once this is checked, and tested, it can be done with peace of mind and freedom from pain over time. It is not a lifetime disorder when it is tested and corrected by the doctors and clinics who know how....
When spiritual life suffers, the mind and body suffers also - this can be more difficult than the physical and mental aspects to be corrected.

that was great your friend was cured of mercury toxicity

just looked at the symptoms of mercury toxicity
there are some symptoms that appear to be similar but fibromyalgia is different

the rheumatologist that diagnosed me was an expert on fibromyalgia/mine was triggered by a car accident

am actually fortunate to be alive since hit on the hwy, my car totalled so I try not to complain too much re fibro
