My husband likes to do that. He doesn't have any fancy equipment, in fact his metal detector is quite old. Have you found any treasures? My hubby once detected an entire 5 acres of our farm land and found just old horseshoes and remnants of farm implements. A few days later my big Collie dog was digging a hole to China near the back door and on the top of the dirt heap I saw something shiny catch the sun. It was a tiny real-gold baby locket. I carefully washed it off and it was in excellent condition. The hinge worked fine, but there was no picture inside. The style was very old, and I am certain 1800's. I called the elderly couple who had owned the house before me and asked them if it belonged to anyone in their family. They said it had not, and they had only one son, no girls. They told me that the people owning the house before them were Mennonites (won't wear jewelry). So we don't know whose baby had worn it and lost it. Sort of a sad story.

But, anyway, that doesn't have anything to do with metal detecting. Would be curious to know what you have found.

Yes, we own a metal detector . But is was my dads and we don't have all the parts (that are now hard to get.) Anyway, My Dad was a Gem. We were blessed to have him but didn't know it at the time. He passed away in 1964. I miss him so much. but anyway he was a believing man. My Dad used to pack us up in an old bread truck he made into a motor home- if you will, with pull down beds on the sides and etc. It wasn't much but it got all five kids out of the city of st. louis and into the country for a weekend about once a month. we took trips to the elephant rocks ,places like that and just down the road and into the woods to use that metal detector. Did he ever find anything. NO! YES!! We found each other and shared treasured time together. Mom ,Dad and the five hooligans. ha.We had a wonderful time and it has set me in lilfe with some wonderful thoughts of my Dad and how hard he tried to give his children what children really need. alot of love. Celeste, I am so pleased you shared your story about your father. I had to sigh in happiness for you :)

Yes, Border Collies are great dogs. Sooooooooooo smart! Go to the Photo Gallery/Pet Photos and look for the Border Collie thread... on second thought, here's the link: Shadow, Border Collie There's a photo of Shadow there. My Sheltie and Border Collie get along together perfectly. They are both the greatest dogs God ever created!

yes, I agree 150%. They are really smart. They are friends too. and protective, not aggressive not unless provoked by someone trying to do harm to me. We used to have sheep and our bordie collies were killed then . So we have one that is in the house alot now to protect him!

What stories we could tell about our families if we begin to open up our treasure box of good memories.

Yes shetland Rose ,your bordies are beautiful. All borders are! te he. We found our border as he was a wee little thing thrown out with two other pups (beagles) they were living in our old trash dump. we took the beagles to the vet and kept the bordie.
When I first seen him he was running across our garden lickety split hair laid back. he was the leader (of course) and he was fairly flying anyways I hollered out I want that dog. so they followed him and he lead them to a hole in that old trash dump. He was full of ticks sucking all the blood from him and fleas. He was in poor health because of all the ticks and fleas. I gave him a bath and defleaded him and took all the ticks off of him. For which to this day I think he is grateful. I blessed my dog and said a prayer that he would be a good dog and he is a very good obedient dog.I can't post over at the gallery yet so I am leaving the message here for you.

Are there any other metal detecting enthusiasts out there. I have been metal detecting for about 20 years. As of late I have not had the time I used to and I do miss it.
We have two different models. The first was a standard one we got about 10 years ago. The new Whites works really good.

Among the average nails, bottle tops, and coins, we have found a couple rings around recreational areas.

We don't do it as often as we used to either, but we will go out on a nice afternoon sometimes.

Tangnefedd, Get the thing out and if you have children take them with you. No telling what you could find, surprises or not? anyway it is worth the effort.

Sorry, Itngbolt for messing up your thread. will try not to do that again. I guess we just couldn't help ourselves ,when it came to our borders. I am sorry though.

Hey, it's okay that it shifted to dogs. My brother had a border collie, but she is gone now :(
Hmmm, my best finds, well a 1788 spanish silver half reel was a good one. Some rings including a nice heavy gold masonic ring. I once found a gold pocket watch from 1872 but I gave it to the person who's land it was found on.

A great way to find places to metal detect is during the winter months when it's too cold to get out there go to your local library and do some research. If you can get your hands on some old maps you can compare them with today's maps. You would be surprised at how many parks and utility land was once used for something else like an old army camp or fairground. Some great places are old ballfields, railroad stations, fairgrounds, racetracks. Basically anyplace many people gathered. It is very rewarding doing the research and then actually finding items that let you know you were right.
It is a fun hobby and when my kids were younger we would all go out as a family to the beach and they would dig up the finds.

I want to get my husband back in the hobby of metal detecting. Where we live we can't do it in the winter...would have to dig under 4 feet of snow. But there are lots of old ruins of lumber camps everywhere and ghost towns that used to exist in the lumbering era. They are gone now, but if we had old maps to follow that would be so much fun!

gee, you gave alot of good imformation. thanks. sounds like you used this metal detecting as a tool to get to know the children too huh. that would be a grand thing for the young married couples/children to do now a days too. and not all that expensive.
