Hi everyone, a good friend of mine has a friend who has got involved with some pretty heavy stuff with a religious/spiritual group in Queensland, and my friend and I are trying to work out who the group may be. I thought I might ask around the Aussie forum and see if any of you have heard of these guys and might be able to tell us who they are/what name they go under etc.
Its a group that I suppose you would lump under the 'eastern cult' banner. They claim to be teaching from Yoga/Hinduism (they do a lot of chanting and meditation, and dancing meditation too, plus they take Indian names, wear orange sannyas robes, and the main centre is in India - there is apparently a teacher/Guru in Queensland too) but are involved with some stuff that really goes against that teaching too - lots of drugs, lots of group sex, lots of stealing, and they are encouraged to completely cut themselves off from their family.
I was involved with the Yoga scene for a number of years but I can't for the life of me work out who this group could be - in some respects it resembles some of what went on with the Osho/Bhagwan Rajneesh disciples, but she describes herself as a Hare Krishna. A lot of what they are doing goes against Hare Krishna teaching though and would never be practiced by the massive majority of followers.
These sorts of things sometimes get exaggerated I know, but she apparently came home for a while and wanted to leave the group, and told her folks about the stuff that was going on, but then got coerced into returning. I don't know, maybe the description is a bit innacurate (as I said, it doesn't sound like any group I know) but I still think there is a very good chance that it isn't a good scene at all.
So anyway, if anyone in Queensland (or anywhere else - i think there is a community in Perth as well) would be able to help us to work out who it is that she may have got involved with, can give us any info, we'd be really grateful. We'd also be grateful if those of you who feel inclined could remember her in your prayers.
Thanks very very much.
