• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

that alcohol is scarier than every drug on earth? I mean, it's not even close. Where I'm from, it's almost normal to drive drunk.. and the effects never bring about any change.. death, loss of income, etc.

It's just so scary.. I'm not an alcoholic, I don't like it.. but yea, it's devouring the world. I said on facebook a few days ago that the Devil must be in-love with alcohol. It's terrible.. I pray whoever struggles can overcome this terrible element of society.

Alcohol is bad for some people while crack is bad for others. Sometimes both are bad for the same person. Addictions are powerful fortresses filled with powerful spirits. The 12 Steps are powerful tools break up the problems but the addict has to use them or they will probably stay lost. The 12 Steps are a guide for how to work with others and God.

I agree with this post. Alcohol is not addictive to everyone. For those of us who are alcoholics, total abstinence is necessary to ensure not getting drunk, and hooked again. There are people who can drink socially, with no problem whatsoever.

I am so grateful for the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, as they helped me connect with the Lord in a deeper, more meaningful way. They also gave me a set of instructions on how to utilize what Scripture says about how to work through my past and heal my relationships with others.

Apart from the addictiveness of alcohol, it is also highly accessible and relatively inexpensive. Also, from a cultural standpoint, there are times in the lives of people when heavy drinking almost represents a rite of passage - as in the case of students just entering university, for instance. In Ontario, where I live, the government owns most of the liquor and beer stores. So I would agree that this is a menacing substance that has been harmful to many people.

Alcohol is intertwined with almost every aspect of life. It is present everywhere. Restaurants, sporting events, weddings, grocery stores, gas stations...It's legally available and culturally accepted (and romanticized). No drug could ever match the power of alcohol as far as attainability, marketing and revenue generation. It's really big business, on both sides of the law. Governments bring in lots of revenue via taxation of alcohol, and they also profit off fines and penalties for alcohol-related arrests. We're told how bad alcohol can be for us, yet we're bombarded with messages designed to influence us to use it. It's nearly impossible to escape.

Thankfully, God has lifted from me the desire to drink and instilled within me the desire to do the right thing (which in every situation means DON'T DRINK), so I can perceive those messages for what they are, and be secure in my belief that alcohol is bad for me and generally doesn't lead to positive outcomes for almost anyone who uses too much of it or uses it too often. And for me, 1 drink is too much and 1 time is too often.

Yes, alcohol is by far the most destructive drug worldwide for all the reasons cited in these posts. This fact is supported by World Health Organization statistics.

It almost killed me many times... only His grace set me free.

Blessings!

God has taken the craving of alcohol away from me, but not my depression or anxiety, so I still want to medicate myself with it, though I do not even like the taste of it anymore.

I hate alcohol, I hate how it is acceptable everywhere, and for every occasion. It was even in Jesus day, not sure why, but it has just about killed me. And sometimes I wish it would.

Some alcoholics have co-occurring mental health issues, like your depression and anxiety. I know I am bipolar, in addition to being an alcoholic. My psychiatrist has me on the right combination of medications to take away the need, or desire, to self-medicate. If you are struggling with depression and anxiety, you should have a psychiatric evaluation. It will probably help you feel better, and the desire to self-medicate would be lifted.

There is nothing wrong with alcoholics taking psychotropic medications to help ease mental health symptoms.

Hi MsLadyFaith,

You might find attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and working the 12 Steps helpful in your early sobriety. The social support is awesome, and the Steps brought me even closer to the Lord.

It gives me nightmares, night terrors, blackouts and is so stressful on my body. Yeah it is pretty scary to alcoholics like me. The mind is tricky though and tries to convince me of all kinds of lies about using so I will relapse in spite of all the damage that can do.

In Alcoholics Anonymous, I have learned to change my thinking, and grow more Spiritually. I recommend it to everyone who struggles with alcohol. The 12 Steps help me grow closer to the Lord.

I guess I am lucky. Drinking makes me sick after one drink so it's Green tea 4 me. It's much better for you.

Ruth, I love Green Tea, but can't drink it anymore. When I had a pulmonary embolism, and was put on Coumadin, I was told it has Vitamin K in it, which messes with the Coumadin. I have had to give up other things too, like dark green vegetables and shellfish. I used to make a gallon of iced Green Tea a day. It's the best. I sure miss it. I do not miss the alcohol any more, praise the Lord for that.

I started drinking at the age of 14 (55 yrs now) and it is only by the grace of God that I am here today. I left my liquid friend in 1997 and it was a friendship I had to end before he took my life.
